I'LL BE SEEING YOU: A SENTIMENTAL JOURNEY continues the artist's ambitious project by taking on a variety of standards, including "St. LouisBlues", "A-Tisket, A-Tasket", and "I'll Be Seeing You". YetCarter's journey is not one of mere nostalgia: her inventive musicianship and forward-thinking vision keep things freshand relevant. Guest spots from vocalist Dee Dee Bridgewaterand clarinetist Paquito D'Rivera, among others, add spice and variety.

Regina Carter belongs to that awesome elite of the dominant generation of recording jazz musicians (others are Wynton Marsalis, James Carter, Cyrus Chestnut ...there are more) whose technique and repetoire are as perfect as can be imagined.
This album acknowledges the artist's personal circumstances in responding to a family death which affected her spirit. She has risen above this with great spirit. Although the rendition of Sentimental Journey is burdened with that gloom in what can only be called a dirge, the album as a whole is inspirational and, as with most of her work, a platform for her brillance combined with some very careful market sensitivity in the broadness of its appeal.
The beauty of her tone comes through on 'I'll be seeing you' and the Ellington number 'Blue Rose'. With cameo appearances by Dee Dee Bridgewater and Carla Cook the album sustains itself well-above an "easy-listening" label whilst being very comforting.
My only critism of this work would equally apply to many of those in this jazz elite. They might learn well from Duke Ellington to balance the commercial success of their genius - and that is what it is - with a some more alternate focus on more pure music that will give them a lasting legacy and contribution to the live element that is jazz history. Regina Carter's last such album was Freefall with Kenny Barron. Jazz appears to be increasingly short of composers and producers with itch and vision to move forward from the perfected retrospection that has dominated the past 15 years in this idiom.
