Although only sixteen years of age, I do so fondly remember the days, nearly ten years ago when I used to watch the old episodes of Coronation Street on ITV's Granada Plus. However, that channel is now gone, therefore I was ecstatic when I found this collection. I purchased it immediately and am very impressed with it so far, and I've only watched the 1960/61 discs up until now. I must say, the show was a lot more interesting when it was gritty and not aimed at younger audiences in a bid to rival Eastenders, that most ghastly of programmes. It is so interesting to see how much society has changed, from people being friendly and doing anything to help their neighbours, to today's, selfish uncaring, individualistic attitude where nobody will help anybody. The earlier episodes are most comical and amusing aswell. If you think Blanche Hunt was funny, you have not heard the likes of Ena Sharples, whether arguing with Elsie Tanner, or defining the difference between couch potato's who sit in front of the TV all night, or herself, who sits in front of the TV all night only to "criticise" it, to her friend Martha Longhurst. This boxset is beautiful. Not only is it humorous but it is the last link we have to a long forgotten mode of society, which is irretrievable today. I would recommend this collection to anybody, you will not find it cheaper anywhere else. In fact, I was so impressed by it, that I purchased the 1970's collection the night following it's arrival!

I got this box set for me little brother, who had been having trouble viewing some of these old clips on Youtube while he's been living in Germany. So he comes back to the UK, we boot the laptop and then he's howling with laughter at Ena Sharples. So why not, thinks I, i'll get him this boxset for his birthday. He's loving it.
The quality is eminently watchable for recordings so old. The characters are legendary, the writing and stories so realistic. You really do realize why these characters became so iconic-the Elsie Tanners, the Ena Sharples and the Annie Walkers-they're so boldly drawn. The sense of community, the struggling, the pride of these characters-Coronation Street really had working class North of England down to a tee, which is probably why its endured.
There aren't any extras or pamphlets-i wasn't interested in receiving loads of extras. Its
just episode after episode of British TV at its finest.
Look out for Ena's rant in hospital, too. They're after her vestry!

Like the other two 'Coronation Street' through-the-decade DVD collections, this is a generous collection of 80 episodes, housed in a huge, cardboard box. There are no subtitles, no extras, and no remastering, but what you have is quality drama with likeable characters, and a real large helping of warmth and humour.

On the first disc you have the first eight episodes, written by the show's creator Tony Warren, and vintage 1960s performances from the legendary Violet Carson as the battleaxe Ena Sharples, Doris Speed as snooty Rovers Return landlady Annie Walker, and Pat Phoenix as the worldly, feisty Elsie Tanner. It's all great stuff, and real down-to-earth gritty Northern drama. It's a different show to the one on our screens today, because it was character driven, not the sensationalist rubbish that makes 'Corrie' so popular today.

The actors back then were so good, particularly when you consider the show went out live. The characters come and go, but the sense of community spirit still shines through. Look out for a young Julie Goodyear as Bet Lynch, back when she was just a factory girl for a few episodes before the character returned in 1970, and the wonderful, late Jenny Moss, who was a great child actress in the role of the troublesome Lucille Hewitt. A few of the cast are still with us today, Emily Bishop (then Nugent) and Ken Barlow, who wasn't a great actor even at the start. Arthur Lowe was particularly good as Emily's love interest Leonard Swindley, and Bernard Youens and Jean Alexander as Stan and Hilda Ogden were soap's answer to Laurel and Hardy.

Buy this set and travel back in time. Once you watch these classic black and white episodes, you'll soon realise why the public quickly fell in love with 'Coronation Street'.

I watched a lot of the early episodes between the ages of about 9 and 12, and despite living on the far side of the world, I suspect it was highly formative of my attitudes towards drama and people in general. Even as a child my favourite was Arthur Lowe's Mr Swindley (how could I have known the greatness of the actor, or anything about this tightly wound character?). The fact that the names of all the characters have stuck in my head after 40 years says something. And that haunting theme. In Australia Coronation was paired twice weekly with the TV serial of Peyton Place, which was far glossier but left me cold. For al its lack of production value the Street was a far more engaging place to visit.
