Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
Sometimes it might not be all too helpful to be backwards looking, but that is of course difficult with a retrospective, and under such circumstances you just can’t avoid the torrent of contradictions that spew forth from Britpop-adopted statesman/grandad Paul Weller. There was, for example, the flood of vitriol against his fellow Brit Award nominees before he blithely accepted the ‘outstanding contribution’ thing anyway. There is then the fact that he was in both The Jam and The Style Council. And also that despite his ideological rallying against it in his early days he now pretty much lives off nostalgia’s interest alone, this album being case in point, despite knocking out a decent little solo album not long ago.

This collection was recorded live at Alexandra Palace in North London at the end of 2005 and whatever you could say about his live band, you can’t call them anything other than tight, seasoned and unfalteringly professional. They strut between choice cuts from his solo career ("Peacock Suit", "Porcelain Gods", "You Do Something To Me", the recent "Come On Let’s Go") with consummate ease, and aside from a couple of wandering solos make this experience as effortless for the listener as it seems it was for them. Weller stands at the heart of all this like a deep-rooted oak. And if there are dips at any point, and there are a couple, the extensive set is justified by how fabulously redeeming "A Town Called Malice" still sounds at its climax.--James Berry

4.0 out of 5 stars A sad old mod, 6 Aug 2006

I have to say that I only wrote this review because the main amazon review irritated me so much. I really don't know what Paul Weller does to deserve such acidic reviews, even when the reviews are positive they seem to be so begrudging in their content that you know the reviewer is hating himself/herself for the good words. I would urge anyone who listens to this to forget who PW is and just listen - its good stuff! He's a fantastic musician and writes some great songs - this alone makes this album worth buying. Now my title probably gives my away my prejudiced but you listen to "town called malice" and just tell me this is not a great album by a great artist!! enjoy!!.

4.0 out of 5 stars The essence of Weller captured live., 30 Jun 2006
For years Paul Weller has been regarded as one of the leading live performers and with such a strong back catalogue has always managed to keep his live shows fresh. Musically his band are fanatstic making a number of the 'live' performances even better than the already excellent studio recordings. Having only got this a few days ago the stand out tracks so far are 'Changing Man' 'Blink and you'll miss it' from his solo material and of course 'that's Entertainment' and 'A town called malice' from The Jam days. With 23 tracks and very little filler this is a great value purchase.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice document, but ready for a new thing, 19 Jun 2006
By Samuel Thompson "Samuel_merck" (USA) - See all my reviews

I have been a Weller fan from the Jam days. Then The Style Council. And now, Paul Weller solo. Three distinct musical styles. In fact, that's what is so great about Weller. He re-invents his sound every so often. Or does he?

This CD documents well his third stage. The folk, rock sound. (The latest studio cd, As Is Now, was perhaps the best of this sound). He does a fine job on the songs he wrote during this third phase. But when it comes to Jam songs, it seems to be missing the zing of the originals. You can not doubt the original sound contribution of Foxton/Buckler. Town called Malice seems half speed and In The Crowd goes on at a snales pace.

So to my original point, Weller seems ready for a new thing. Maybe not the slickness of Style Council, but something more experimental, less folk-rock. Have you ever heard the Wild Wood dub version?

Go on Weller. You can do it!
