DVD Description
This double DVD includes "His Big White Self" and the feature-length prequel 'The Leader, The Driver & The Driver's Wife"

"The Leader..." (1991) Conceived as an instalment of the trailblazing Channel 4 series 'True Stories', Nick Broomfield's frightening and hilarious film exposes the absurd depths of devotion the neo-Nazi Afrikaner Resistance Movement and its leader, Eugene Terre'blanche, inspire in the peoples of Apartheid-ridden South Africa in the early 1990s. In a purposefully ramshackle quest for an interview with the illusive Terre'blanche, Broomfield cajoles, hustles and irritates the svengali-like figure, his driver JP and JP's extraordinarily chipper wife Anita, in a startlingly successful effort to peel back the layers of the regime and its unnervingly congenial membership. 80 mins                                                                                                                                 The result is a taut, gripping and often very funny film which shows the neo-Nazisto be rather less formidable than their well drilled image suggests." Time Out

"His Big White Self" (2006) The aftermath of "The Leader..." was deadly serious for all concerned. The final days of Apartheid led to the nominal defeat of the white right as the ANC came to power. More crucially, Eugene Terre'blanche, facing certain incarceration and national ridicule, had no doubt bid his followers to implement the numerous death and bomb threats that Broomfield was subjected to in the months that followed the film's release in 1991. Never thinking in his worst nightmares that 14 years later he would feel compelled to track down 'His Big White Self'...of course, Broomfield did just that. This new and unmissable film further explores Terre'blanche's absurd yet insidious character, exposing his regime's stark and sobering impact that lingers to this day. Broomfield revisits the familiar and haunted faces of those brought down and broken by democracy's rise in South Africa, finally confronting the newly released and unrepentant Terre'blanche in a manner not only tense but also hilarious and unforgettable. 113 mins

5.0 out of 5 stars Intelligent, in-depth and interesting, 9 April 2009
By Mr. Matthew Sheen "MattSheen" (Chester, Cheshire UK) - See all my reviews

After visiting South Africa on a few occasions, i totally fell in love with the country and the people and wanted to learn more. It was after seeing His Big White Self on TV that compelled me to buy the double dvd set including the original documentary "The leader, His driver and the Driver's wife". I was not in the least bit disappointed.

The original film removes the unjustified respect that other film makers had created about a man who is simply an ignorant bully, who had found his war to fight. Some parts of the film are cringingly funny as Terre'blanche is lured by Broomfield to show his true nature and ideas in a similair way that Sacha Baron Cohen uses his many characters to ease people into opening up. I feel that this was very important as a political leader such as Terre'blanche could only hurt his country at a time of positive change. As he had/did on many occasions.

The second film is a far more serious and scary, showing the country post-apartheid. The lengths to which the supporters of Terre'blanche would go for their leader and the belief system were at least unnerving.
Watching Terre'blanche's grip on his supporters and his country slip from his grasp was suprsingly sad. A once proud and brave fighter with a voice like thunder left with only his melancholic poetry, his only voice to the people of South Africa. Nothing more than a punch line to his own joke.

Truly brilliant, a much watch for anyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding!, 21 Jan 2008

Nick Broomfield impresses again. An object lesson in how far you can push things with a subject by a careful building of rapport, however obnoxious your quarry may be. There can be few interviewees more tricky to handle than ETB - but as ever Nick probed with a mixture of studied naivete (a la Louis Theroux) & sensitivity. Masterful stuff.
