Manufacturer's Description

Tp Toys are built for tough outdoor play, year in year out. We use the highest quality steel and more importantly our steel is galvanised, which means it is tough, more weather resistant and very durable. We take care to maximise the life of our plastic slides, platforms and sandpits by utilising quality pigments and ultra violet stabilisers.

With over 40 years experience we take your safety very seriously indeed. All tp toys are designed and developed to exceed the stringent BS5665/EN71 British & European Safety of Toys Standards for toys in domestic use. Safety is right at the top of our design priorities when developing new toys.

The Challenger truly lives up to its name: entertaining the curious one year old when built at low height, challenging the adventurous eight year old at full height. The many entry and exit paths are key to its versatility.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing durability, 15 May 2008
Durability:2.0 out of 5 stars Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars Educational:3.0 out of 5 stars
We have had our TP Challenger for 2 years. It has had light use. We were disappointed that the tent den has broken already, the webbing straps have disintegrated (weather damage or maybe birds?) but this is not covered by the guarantee. TP do not offer a repair service, and a replacement is £60.

In fact the guarantee is only on the metal parts (providing you maintain them from rust by sanding and treating), and not even the plastic screw thread inside the metal components of the frame. On moving the slide part this year we discovered that it was impossible to re-connect as it has plastic threading inside, rather than a screw & bolt fitting. We had to improvise with spare parts from an old baby trampoline to fit the slide back.

For the amount of money that this cost we are very disappointed, and would not recommend or buy TP again.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good but expensive, 18 Jun 2008

Unlike the previous reviewer, we haven't had any problems with ours albeit that it has stood out in the garden for 5 years now. It's also moved house with us. We've removed the toddler bits as we don't need these any more. It's still a pirate ship / castle / den.

Good points:

* Robust & durable
* Excellent fun for kids, teaches balance & mobility skills
* Relatively easy to construct but you have to follow the instructions to the letter
* Can be dismantled & moved when necessary
* Can be expanded with add-ons easily
* We expect to be able to sell it when we no longer want it

Bad points:

* Expensive - but all the quality ones are
* Too many different lengths of bar - instructions are essential
* Some screw threads can rust making dismantling & reassembly difficult
* Vinyl tent & platforms can become unglued at the seams

I can't comment for TP's guarantee as we haven't had to use it. Make your own mind up, but it's still popular with our kids.

2.0 out of 5 stars Poor fabric, potentially dangerous, 5 Oct 2009

I bought the Challenger Den just over 2 years ago when my child was 3, it has not been heavily used but it's totally unusable now as the webbing straps which the frame is threaded through have all torn in the recent windy weather. Thankfully it wasn't being used at the time.

The straps all look fine, no visible rot, no fraying, but after 2 years in the garden you can tear them like paper.

It would be a big operation to remove and re-install the tent whenever it was wanted, I think that it should be good enough to stand outside all year round for more than 2 years
