Synopsis

Based on the Broadway show from the Damon Runyon short story and filled to the brim with Frank Loesser tunes such as 'Luck Be A Lady' and 'Sit Down, You're Rocking The Boat', this outrageously comic film featuring Marlon Brando's bold musical debut is a colourful tale about gamblers, a feisty Salvation Army lass, and a dance-hall girl with a pining heart. Veteran gambler Sky Masterson (Brando) takes a bet from Nathan Detroit (Frank Sinatra) that he can win the affection of a soldier (Jean Simmons) in the Salvation Army, setting himself up to lose both his money and his heart. Romance is the last thing the gambler and the missionary expect, and they fight against their attraction for all they're worth in glowing singing and dancing numbers. Love proves to be contagious as spicy dancer Miss Adelaide, in a role re-created for the screen from Broadway by showstopper Vivian Blaine, is determined to get her fiance, Nathan, to the altar one way or another. Stubby Kaye and B.S. Pully also reprise their stage roles in this glorious Cinemascope film that earned four Academy Award nominations. GUYS AND DOLLS consistently ranks among the most popular film musicals of all time.

5.0 out of 5 stars a salacious salsa worth your salt and pepper, 13 Feb 2009
By Dr. U. L. Khawaja "USMAN LATIF KHAWAJA" (hornchurch ,london) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
a salacious salt and pepper show with salsa at heart-IF YOU THINK BRANDO CANNOT DANCE THINK AGAIN AND HE SURE CAN particularly if simmons is a partner -AS HERE OR IS IT JUST THE CUBAN LATINO MOJO WORKING ON HIM .
anyway he and simmons as the missionary sing and dance their way to your heart and frank sinatra is just as great but brando overshadows him like a lunar eclipse .

there is a great scene where they discuss meringue and cheesecakes and the sales affected by the owners sex charms who is called sally ,while simmons is sarah a missionary sergeant who is starchy and stoic in a seriously square uniform .
the heavenly choreography in havana sequences is better then west side story and that is a real compliment to an under-rated musical .
i think the critics had problems with brando and simmons together but they are very humouresque and also their is a class about them and they are dressed to perfection with brando wearing the best apparels he ever wore on screen .

this is one musical which goes a long way from manhattan to havana and the satire on both religion and patriotism is scintillating with the jazzy musical numbers which diversify from barner shops to vaudeville dance shows .
the ambiant colours and the cheeky acting is a turn on and will atttract all musical fans .

also the lazy direction makes you savour every sequence just as a perfectly baked lemon meringue itself .

this has a making and theatrical trailer and photo gallery as well ,
but i would love to know more about how brando got on with sinatra .that is not possible as brando is dead but the musical is alive
