Product Description

Steff is left the entire estate of his ex-partner, Martin Hilde, son of a wealthy family. To inherit the estate he must scatter Hilde's ashes in the sea. Hilde's mother is refusing to abide to her late son's wishes, intending to contest the will and demanding the ashes stay on the family grounds. Steff attempts to broker an agreement, but more problems arise when Hilde's ex partner Rex turns up, who runs off with the urn in search of the nearest stretch of coast. Steff and Hilde's mother set off in hot pursuit, and so begins Hilde's journey. A touching tale about friendship, personal integrity and death.

Synopsis

Carpenter Steff cuts a deal with the family of his deceased ex-boyfriend, agreeing to give them the bulk of the money left behind despite instructions to the contrary in his will. All Steff wants is a little cash and the urn containing the deceased's ashes. But when another ex of the dead man, Rex, appears, Steff's plans go awry as Rex tries to fulfil the will as it was written.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent German language film with clever and imaginative plot , 9 Jun 2008
By Andrew (London, England) - See all my reviews
This is a very clever film - really keeps you wondering what is going to happen and the ending is nice. What is going to happen to Hilde's ashes? Will he get his final wish or not? I enjoyed this very much. The two men who loved Hilde are very different and the characters are very well developed by the actors. The family dynamic is also interesting and well portrayed. Recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Bleak Lives, 26 Jun 2009
*** This comment may contain spoilers ***

I bought this DVD for three reasons: 1. Oliver Stokowski. 2. German Language. 3. Gay themed. Beyond that and the melancholy trailer it was a gamble with only one review on Amazon.com and no press reviews that I'd ever seen.

All the actors involved turn in uniformly excellent performances and it is photographed with panache. But the storyline raises many more questions than it answers. Indeed, the director seems to take pleasure in not making stuff explicit --as epitomized in the reading of the letter to Hilde's gal-pal, which is only part read before she declines to read the rest as it is "too personal". I don't mind having to work for the answers but really?!

Bleak lives and mourning the death of another gay man to AIDS. Who was this film aimed at exactly --and what was its aim? It was hardly going to have a wide appeal and it's not like we don't know this stuff already. Some insight would have been appreciated. Instead, I feel ambivalent about the whole experience of watching it.

Well made and worthy? Certainly. Enlightening? No not really. In the final analysis, the actors and the cash would have been better invested in telling a story that was positive and uplifting IMO. I'm fed up with seeing gay lives endlessly portrayed as unrelieved misery. There are other songs worth singing.
