Early music has, for the past 20 years or so, been the preserve of period instruments and well-trained but rather thin voices. The days when one could hear Schwarzkopf and Seefried in Monteverdi duets are long gone. Here, however, we have one today's great operatic tenors, Rolando Villazon, performing one of the least operatic early music pieces - the narrator in Monteverdi great masterpiece. And what a performance this is! Utterly gripping, full of passion, and capable of expressing emotions and meanings that must forever be beyond the emaciated resources of most specialists in this music. I absolutely loved this. It should certainly bring this repertoire of genius to a much wider audience. Bravo Villazon, bravo Emmanuelle Haim for daring to commit this to record.
