Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Companies are always going on about the synergy between movies and video games, but all this really ever seems to mean is lots of dreadful movie tie-ins where all the money has been spent on celebrity voiceovers. Stranglehold is different though, in that it’s essentially a sequel to 1992’s classic movie Hard Boiled, made purely for video games. This time Inspector "Tequila" Yuen is unleashing his unorthodox policing methods on Russian crime bosses in both Hong Kong and Chicago. It stars the likeness of original lead Chow Yun Fat and has been developed with hands-on help from director John Woo – who it turns out does seem to know a thing or two about video games.

Of course video games have been ripping off John Woo for years, particularly his trademark slow motion shots of two-handed pistol action. As a result this initially seems dangerously similar to Max Payne et al., but the graphical power of the next generation consoles and PC ensures that this is a far more dynamic and interactive affair. Not only can you make use of a bullet time effect (call "Tequila time" here) to slow down time around you but almost all of the scenery can be used too, from sliding down banisters guns firing to scooting across the room on top of a waiter’s trolley. The damage done as you go is truly impressive, with tiles shattering off the walls, chandeliers impaling bad guys as they fall and electric wires and water mains unhinging themselves everywhere. Making a mess has never been so much fun.

There are a number of great FPS and TPS coming out this season (CRYSIS, CALL OF DUTY 4 and UNREAL TOURNAMENT 3 - just to name a few). Advanced graphics, new weapons, excellent gameplay, new ideas...all true. However, NONE HAS HALF THE STYLE OF STRANGEHOLD!

This game is getting the bum wrap all over - for reasons unfathomable. From gaming magazines (I guess they have to rate some games badly to balance out giving the likes of BIOSHOCK full marks...) to gaming sites, the reviews STRANGEHOLD gets seem to be written by people that have not played the game more than 20 minutes.

Sure, this is a game that takes up almost 13GB of your HDD and it yet runs for about 9-10 hours. Sure, if sports checkpoints (a cheap trick of game developers to artificially augment the game's length by having us replaying the same segments over and over). That is where it looses the 5th star. But the game IS FUN!

When was the last time that you had REAL FUN with a shooter? Dive-shoot in the rain, dodge bullets while sliding on table-tops or cat-walk up a stairs balustrade and pick out the bad guys one by one...And you get to do all these IN STYLE! Yes, this is the best TPS since MAX PAYNE!

Remember the movie THE REPLACEMENT KILLERS? Well, this is the game equivalent - and it is GREAT!

RECOMMENDED!

Don't blindly believe the 5 star reviews already here. This is a game based on an early 90's film. It has the same feel as many games from the period. You are stuck behind some guy's head and can only do what the game wants. No freedom of movement around the city, no ability to change view point to first person and few options. I like to be able to change the view point and be the one looking. A lot of the time I really couldn't see round Chow Yun's head in the game. Slow motion bullet time is nice and you can jump around a lot, lots of shooting up the environment is possible. Can't help wishing I could change the view and enjoy it more. Maybe I'm missing something.

OK the graphics are OK but they should be, this game is a whopping 15gb on your hard drive. The whole feel is tired and the game feels clumsy not smooth when it comes to combat. This game just seems to offer a lot less than games like old games like Far Cry.I didn't find it much fun.

The price for Stranglehold is about right at 17 pounds, by that I mean it's not a new game being offered at a super bargain price, it's what it's worth.

Buy this game is you are a hard core Woo fan and want to go from one shoot up to the next. If you like shooting tiles, signs and the whole environment then this is for you.

This game is top of the list when it comes to realistic graphics. Your adversaries react differently with each shot you take and experience pain in the location you hit them. All objects you see you can use within the game and they behave accordingly: A table you slide over in one scene will splinter under fire.

A bit dated qua graphics and level design; you're literally walking from shootout to shootout with hundreds of bad guys swarming you one after the other.

Having recently found the game in a second hand shop I thought "what the hey", i'll give it a bash having seen some cool trailers for it. Now that I have played it I think that realistically this game could have been amazing but instead is only reasonable. Let me explain:

First the good points.

The games design in terms of attention to detail and nifty little quirks is exactly the sort of thing any software company needs to be looking for if they want to make a game with that something special. The graphics are great, although for myself I am FAR more into the playability than the graphics so this only counts for about half a star. Neat quirks though within the graphics are the character facials that the software team have obviously spent alot of time on.

The progression through each "special" skill I think is paced well and suitably explanatory as well as each one being a lot of fun. The first time I used the barrage attack with twin submachine guns I just ran through a huge wad of enemies taking out most of the scenery with them. :-)

Other great attention to detail includes the reaction of the enemies you shoot. Pop one in the nuts and they grab at their now missing crown jewels, shoot one in the neck and they clutch at it gagging from their own blood.

The other fantastic little quirk is the environment. There's very little within the game that you can't blow to pieces with enough fire power. The game says that shooting walls next to enemies causes them to shield their eyes but I haven't noticed this myself.

Finally there is the jumping onto chandeliers, diving onto trolleys, kicking up tables to crouch behind, etc.

Stranglehold is a third person shooter similar to the likes of Max Payne as you can slow down time and dive to dodge bullets etc. There is no film noir here however, the theme of this game is very much a hollywood action blockbuster which is hardly surprising considering John Woo helped with the game.

So what makes this game worth buying?
Visually the game is good although nothing next gen about it. The main visual element to the game is the fact that the entire scenery can be shot up and destroyed in fairly unique ways, which is probably why about 15gb of your hard drive will be used for the install.

Tequilla time, the equivilent to bullet time, allows you to slow time and dive etc etc. Whilst nothing new about this feature, it helps improve other features which I will continue to explain.

John Woonesss
If you have ever seen a John Woo film you will know that there is invariably lots of cool shooting and action scenes and Stranglehold doesn't disappoint. Whilst Max Payne was able to dive left and right, maybe backwards and forwards if you felt like a change, Stranglehold allows the player to dive on to food carts that roll forwards whilst tequilla time lets you mow down a selection of bad guys before jumping off and sliding down a staircase banister. You can run up banisters as well, jump off walls, slide across tables and even kick a table over in order to use it for cover. All of these features look cool in tequilla time.

Standoff
A feature I've not seen before, if your character is faced by a number of opponents in a standoff, the whole thing slows down and you attack one enemy at a time. You can see their bullets slowly coming towards you and you have to dodge them and return fire.
