5.0 out of 5 stars Escape this, 10 Jul 2006
By A. Rowlinson (Manchester, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
There comes a time when every music fan must pay attention. Now is that time. Now, before I continue, I must warn you Escape The Fate isn't for the popular, preppy bullshit we've all grown to love because we've been fed it day in and day out. Escape The Fate is a down and dirty, raunchy, in-your face rock with an anything goes attitude. This is what Classic Rock will become. Their new EP There's No Sympathy For The Dead coincides with their band name in that there really isn't any sympathy for anything with this winner-take-all world we live in. To these guys, these five guys, they must live and love these songs in order to escape their fate which they feel their doomed for: Being a failure.

The most noticeable aspect this band produces is their high octave guitaring without any flaws. With just five tracks, you have to understand they're aiming for perfection. This isn't any one-hit-wonder band. The guitars on this album are similar to soldiers marching in line, with precisian and fearlessness, they play till their satisfied. If you're looking for gut wrenching solos, make sure you check out the title track, "There's No Sympathy For The Dead".

Taking production duties for this EP is Michael "Elvis" Baskette (The Classic Crime, Chevelle, Cold), but don't be fooled with his past titles. He took this project to the max and with the band's LP slated for September 26, 2006. Expect these guys to tear it up everywhere. The vocals are split amongst 4 people with everyone participating on the vocals on every song. You'd think it'd be too crazy to be good, but actually everything is strategically placed in the motion of melodies. You could compare the vocals to an early Sonny Moore of From First To Last as well as screams coming from the Grindcore genre to Underoath and Senses Fail.

With all the insane guitar work and clean cut vocals, you can sometimes overlook that the bass exists, but you need to understand a lot of the tracks melodies are based on the bass line. The guitars just add on to it and mold it to perfection. The drums are also a key component of this band. Without the typewriter kick drumming and constant tapping of the snare, you couldn't give any of the instruments the ability to be played as hard as they are. This band is a factory spitting out more hits than misses. I guarantee you; you aren't going to forget these guys.

The lyrics on this EP are all taken from their lives living in Las Vegas, interactions with the fake as well as the ones holding them down. They also have songs about their desperate need for fame and fear of losing everything and becoming everything they hate. Their metaphors and repetitious lyrics speak their philosophy of how music today is tasteless and how they see themselves as the messiahs to save the rock spectrum they've seen die. They plan to strike anything that moves and since nobody can stay still for any long amount of time. We're definitely going to feel what they've got within them.

What a way to make your motto your album title, There's No Sympathy For The Dead. Escape The Fate has come to save us all with their melodic licks and hardcore musical attitude. Saosin has definitely got some competition this fall when their yet-to-be-titled LP hits stores September 26th. Their 5 song EP is in stores now. You won't be disappointed.
