Product Description
Amazon.co.uk Review
In 2006, Danger Mouse is King Midas of the music world. He has an uncanny knack for creating jagged, dense, frenzied beats and odd, eerie, vivid soundscapes that never compromise the music's natural flow. Meanwhile, rapper and singer Cee-Lo, a veteran of Atlanta's Dirty South scene, has never been one to be constrained by hip-hop conventions, and is a willing partner in adventure. The result is an intrepid psychedelic blend of pop, hip-hop, soul, and rock that consistently challenges and delights. It's no wonder that "Crazy," with its modest riff, irresistible hook, and disarming opening line ("I remember when, I remember, I remember when I lost my mind") became a worldwide Internet sensation a full six months before the official release of St. Elsewhere. But that relatively simple soul-pop gem is the tamest track on this wide-ranging, often dark and introspective collaboration. (In fact, the duo considers Gnarls Barkley to be a wholly new creation, as opposed to a collaboration of existing artists.) "Everybody is somebody, but nobody wants to be themselves," Cee-Lo croons on "Who Cares?" He and Danger Mouse try very hard not to be their old selves as they creatively and confidently break down boundaries, but the brilliant cores of their musical personae--Cee-Lo's eccentric spiritual soul man and Danger's bold sonic explorer--remain. --Marc Greilsamer

4.0 out of 5 stars UNUSUAL BUT GOOD, 18 Aug 2006

This review is from: St. Elsewhere (Audio CD)
Owing to mixed reviews of St Elsewhere, I borrowed a friend's copy and at the end of my first listen I thought what a weird mix of styles and songs. But I played it again and by the third play I was hooked. This is a real mix of soul, funk and hip hop and it shouldn't really work but it does, mainly because of Cee-Lo's smooth vocals! At only 35 minutes it's quite a short album, but the most interesting thing will be the next release from this duo to see if they can sustain their new found fame.

3.0 out of 5 stars Average, 18 May 2006
I think everyone loves Crazy, they really hit the nail on the head with that track. One of those songs that appeals to everyone. So I bought this album as soon as possible and have listened to it, and listened to it, and listened to it. Then I couldnt be bothered, its dull.

However! It may be a grower, but I feel very little motivation to go back to it to be honest. This isnt my usual area of music mind you. But after the breathtaking masterpeice of crazy I was expecting a little something at least to grab me about this album, but nothing really has. Nothing on it is truely memorable to me, or THAT different. I suggest you download some tracks, give it a test drive before you buy. It may well be some peoples cup of tea. But if (like me) you were simply swept away by Crazy and made silly assumptions, think twice, eh?

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid album, 31 May 2006
This review is from: St. Elsewhere (Audio CD)
This is a good solid album. The now infamous Crazy is arguably the highlight but the other songs are more than just fillers. It is exceptionally upbeat and more than a little funky at times. The album has had some bad reviews, I think, because people were expecting 11 Crazy matching songs but that was not possible. It has much more variety than that and should apeal to people with a strange sense of humour. There is a little bit of rap and a lot of soul. Good stuff.
