"Edgar", Puccini's second opera is very rarely performed in the theatre and, unfortunately, I have never seen it.

However, I am a big fan of Puccini's music and, having previously enormously enjoyed the recent EMI Pappano/Gheorghiu/Alagna recording of "La Rondine" (another rarely performed work that I have not seen), this recording featuring Placido Domingo as Edgar was too tempting to resist.

I would say that anyone who enjoys Puccini's later operas would enjoy listening to this CD. The opera itself is very short, under 90 minutes. The music is very Puccinian and although the great "killer" arias are absent it didn't detract from the enjoyment of the opera's music. Having heard it, I cannot really understand why it doesn't get performed more often - the dynamicism of the music hints at the possibility of a good theatrical experience too - is the duration too short perhaps? The accompanying booklet puts it down to the fact that the plot is "preposterous" but I'm sure opera lovers will have seen and enjoyed operas that fall into that category.

Lovers of Puccini's music will recognise some passages and phrases that he has borrowed and used in his later operas: again, this doesn't detract from the enjoyment. It's very interesting to hear the opera in full and as a result be able to understand something about his musical development.

The performances are excellent all round, as you'd expect from Deutsche Grammophon, so I can recommend this CD without reservation to anyone who has ever enjoyed Puccini's music.
