Product Description

Product Description

The Peddlers were labeled - somewhat unfairly - as a middle of the road outfit, possibly because Roy Phillips Blues-drenched voice and the trio's line-up came off with a sophisticated jazz edge. Also their 1968 CBS album Three In A Cell was for many years a charity shop staple, suggesting that its popularity at the time had been followed by exile into the world of the unfashionable. But it was Suite London which showcased a style of atmospherics on the slow tracks that saw their version of Alan Lerner's "On A Clear Day" being sampled by freak funk outfit and London club pioneers Sandals for their 1992 single "Nothing". However it was the strange combination of The Peddlers with The London Philharmonic Orchestra, recorded as their final album with the band's original line-up, that was the true find.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!, 4 Aug 2006
By Steve Smith (Poole, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The Peddlers started making music together in 1964. Like many people I know, when growing up as a teenager in the 1980s/90s I wouldn't have listened to anything that was produced in the 1960s or 70s. But now mellowing with old age, I'm beginning to appreciate a wider variety of music.

I bought this CD by chance after hearing their superb cover version of My Funny Valentine (part of the Live at the Pickwick CD, which sadly doesn't seem to be available anymore...).

Suite London was recorded in the early 70s with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

Imagine the kind of music Zero 7 would have produced if they had been about in the 1960s/70s (with only Mozez on vocal duties), and you won't be far wrong.

Indeed, Zero 7 covered The Peddlers track "I Have Seen" on their debut album Simple Things.

This CD is worth the money if only to hear how that track originally sounded. I would certainly recommend this to anyone who likes laid back jazzy, funky sounds.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Neglected Masterpiece , 10 Dec 2007
By N. T. Procter (London) - See all my reviews

I just about remember The Peddlers first time around and got to appreciate them through my father's copy of their superb Fantastic Peddlers LP on Pickwick (now when's that coming out on CD?).

However, anyone expecting their usual soulful interpretations of other's songs will be in for a shock with The London Suite, which is all their own work and so much the better for it.

As a London resident of many years, I cannot think of any other record that captures the atmosphere of London so completely, combining elements of jazz, blues and orchestral music to such stunning effect.

Listen without prejudice-you will not be disappointed !

The Peddlers are an amazing act. It is the originality that they exuded that set them apart as the most different act of the 1960`s. Read more

Great to have CD's of them. Takes me back a lot of years to some good music. Possibly the first time I had heard an organ within a group for modern music.
