Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

In a nutshell:
Real-time strategy games are not normally the sort of thing you see on a console but EA have pulled out all the stops to make The Battle for Middle-Earth II work on the Xbox 360, with easy to learn controls and mountains of online options.

The lowdown:
Although most real-time strategy games are designed around using a PC keyboard and mouse they usually never get to appear on a console. With this game you’d never have guessed there was ever a problem with just a few button presses allowing you to direct vast armies and construct huge castles and encampments. Although the game is set during the same time period as the movies the action is focused elsewhere in Middle-Earth, although there’s still plenty of familiar faces. Although it benefits more than most from a HDTV screen the only real problem with the game is a slightly short single player campaign, but that shouldn’t be enough to put you off this rare console strategy treat.

Most exciting moment:
The best way to play the game is undoubtedly online, with five all new and very different game modes. The capture the flag mode works particularly well and ensures that multiplayer games never drag on too long or get too defensive.

Since you ask:
The success of this game will not only influence EA’s decision to bring Command & Conquer 3 to the Xbox 360 but THQ are also considering console versions of their real-time strategy games Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War and Company of Heroes.

The bottom line:
The first proper console based real-time strategy game for years.
HARRISON DENT

Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
At last, a decent RTS on a console, halleluja,
The controller works really well once you get used to it.

The gameplay is simple, and anyone who's ever played a RTS knows the concept, Build a fortress, barracks etc, train an army, unleash hell. Each faction has 8 campaigns, and to complete all 16 should take a competent gamer around 16-20 hours.

Then there is online play, and Skirmish mode which adds to the longevity of the game.

The soundtrack is simply stunning, and everything youve come to expect from LOTR films and games.

The Graphics are pretty much the same as the PC version, in other words superb.

All in all a must have for an RTS fan, one minor gripe, I know some of you old school gamers love the mouse, me too, and the Xbox 360 supports most USB mice, so why oh why doesnt anybody implement this in their games?

4.0 out of 5 stars This is what online gaming is all about , 30 Nov 2006

Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
I have played many RTS games in my time but always for the PC, dismissing all console RTS's especially after C&C Retaliation for the PS1. I bought this game on a whim, hearing that the control system had finally been mastered for a console. I was sceptical but they were correct. They have managed to pull it off it is by no means perfect a few more tweaks maybe but it has given a new skill to be mastered.

The single player is great giving you quick and easy instructions on how to play using the new controls. The controls seemed complicated when reading through the manual but the first level gives a perfect tutorial on how to get started without ever slowing the gameplay down. All of the missions are enjoyable, short but still offering plenty of replay value. You can play through both the good missions and the evil, both of them giving completely different levels and it really gets you thinking, as RTS's should.
The single player missions however seem like one big tutorial for you to take online and polish your skills and tactics.
The gameplay is great, with intuitive controls that really do work with a console, and being a next gen game the graphics are excellent some of the best I have seen in a strategy game and have created all of the characters and soldiers from the movie perfectly.

It is online however that this game really shines offering one of the finest Xbox Live experiences I have ever had. The graphics stay as good as the single player, which is odd for a lot of online games. It does take a few games to get into but once you have seen the speed of these games it will all become very natural.
One downside to the multiplayer is lag, and when there are literally hundreds and sometimes thousands of troops all doing their own thing on screen you can see why, but after solid play you don't even notice it and almost feels as if that should be the actual speed of the game.
Every game is different because everybody has there own strategy and this is why it is so enjoyable. You will always encounter new tactics and will have to find a new way of defeating them.
You get to play as six armies which all have their own units, heroes and buildings and each giving their own personality almost to the game. There are also four multiplayer modes that are all very different and definitely all worth playing but I found Versus with four players most enjoyable, allowing tactics and teamwork.

I would definitely recommend this game to any Xbox 360 owner but for die-hard RTS fans you may feel that it lacks the speed and accuracy of a mouse and keyboard.
