I thought this film was fascinating and gripping from start to finish. As another reviewer has said, probably best not to try to work it out, just go with it. It was worth watching a second time; several unexlained things fell into place. The storyline has been reported in other reviews but what can't be conveyed is the way the film unfolds. If you enjoyed The Butterfly Effect, Eternal Sunshine and the Spotless Mind and maybe The Island, you may well like this. I started watching the film with no particular expectation and ended it saying "That was great". It's offbeat and compelling in my opinion and I am sorry to see some reviewers have not enjoyed it but I certainly did. I don't normally review films I watch but it's because I enjoyed this so much that I wanted to comment.

This is a film that bends the mind like "Mulholland Drive" and like that film the clue lies in the opening sequence, in this case with the burning car on Brooklyn Bridge, if you understand this you will understand what is happening in the film.

"Stay" is an awesome achievement, delving into real life in an hallucinatory drama centred on a superb performance by Ryan Gosling as the psychologically unstable student Henry Letham. Psychiatrist Sam Foster (Ewan McGregor) becomes involved in the life of his perplexing patient whose behaviour resonates with his partners problems, Lila Culpepper (Naomi Watts).

This is one helluva complex, multifaceted, multilayered drama that stretches the mind and demands undivided attention from start to finish.

It is true that the plot makes no sense, but for the cinematography alone it's worth watching. Great cast - Ryan Gosling especially is amazing in his role as a psychiatric case. Halfway through the film I told my husband that we don't get it perhaps because we are not smart enough to understand. I was waiting for the end to solve all the confusion created throughout the film. It didn't happen. If anything I was more confused by the end, but it's an otherwise well-made film and kept me interested all the way. There should have been a dummies cut or an accompanying feature presentation that actually explains what's going on, because I still don't know! If the story was told from Gosling's perspective (hallucinations of a dying man), it would somewhat make sense, but it was all told from the psychiatrist's (McGregor) perspective, so I don't get it!

I bought this film because I caught the middle 20 minutes on Film4, all I can say is fabulous film, had me completely hooked!
I really enjoyed the individual character stories and upon a second viewing, the hints to the plot as the film progressed.
Each time I watch it I learn something new!

Marc Foster's Stay has lots of visual flair, but not a lot of discernable content. It's a silly, perplexing psychological thriller, featuring some good performances, but is ultimately dressed up like one of those pretentious Euro trash video installations. Stay is a dreamy, surreal exercise in what is imagined, a world of delusion and illusion, where the lines between reality and fantasy are constantly crossed; it's just a pity that through most of the film, it's not clear what is going on.
Henry (Ryan Gosling) is a damaged and disturbed young student, who starts seeing a psychiatrist, Dr. Sam Foster (Ewan McGregor). He's been hearing voices and he can't deal with the fact that his parents died a horrible, blistering, scorching death in a car accident on the Brooklyn Bridge. Henry tells the doctor that he's going to kill himself on Saturday at midnight, so they only have 3 days to talk.
Sam lives with Lila, his girlfriend (Naomi Watts). She teaches art and worries that her own work doesn't pass muster. Lila once tried to commit suicide and Sam worries that she might try it again, even though she now realizes that life is too full of beauty. Sam becomes steadily more obsessed and worried about Henry and goes looking for him around the city, bumping into acquaintances of the young man - an actress-waitress (Elizabeth Reaser) who used to serve Henry pecan pie at a diner, a recently-blinded gentleman (Bob Hoskins) who may be his father, Henry's former doctor (Janeane Garofalo) whom he apparently drove nuts, and his supposedly dead mother (Kate Burton).
As Sam discovers more about his patient, the movie begins to drift into a bizarre dreamlike territory and there's a real sense of spiritual and emotional anxiety from all the characters.Read more ›

I did guess the plot towards middle but itvwas still well worth a watch.

'Stay' is a very complex film, I know that a lot of people didn't enjoy it but I've been able to watch it several times and have to say that I like it a lot. However, I think that this is a film that should be watched at least twice to fully understand and appreciate it.

'Stay' is a thrlller, focusing on the attempts of a psychiatrist (Ewan McGregor) to prevent one of his depressed patients (brilliantly played by Ryan Gosling) from committing suicide. Whilst attempting to do this, he also has to try and maintain his own grip on reality. Bob Hoskins also has a role (a minor one) and is on top form, playing a very realistic sympathetic character.

It is a very good film in terms of bringing suspense and confusion in equal measure. The visual effects are excellent, all of the movie's scenes are not separated with simple cuts but are blended together instead. One minute you believe that you know what is going to happen and the next, it is turned upside with lots of interesting twists and plot/character development. It is all very suspenseful and the soundtrack creates a wonderfully creepy atmosphere.

'Stay' might not please everybody but it is still worth a go. I personally found it to be a very interesting and refreshing film.
