Product Description

Product Description

Comedy spoof starring Alyson Hannigan as a hopeless romantic who has finally met the man of her dreams Grant Funkyerdoder. But before they can have their 'Big Fat Greek Wedding', they'll have to 'Meet the Parents', hook up with 'The Wedding Planner' and contend with Grant's girlfriend, Andy, a spectacularly beautiful woman who wants to put a stop to her 'Best Friend's Wedding'.

From Amazon.co.uk

Sophomoric is too weak a word by at least half to describe the utter silliness Date Movie revels in at every turn. But that's exactly the point of this effort in lowbrow slapstick that proudly proclaims it was created by two of the six writers of the Scary Movie franchise. Adhering to the same spoof formula of those movie romps, Date Movie lampoons countless other current movie characters and plot themes, plus a few that might be a little old for the core audience of youngsters to remember. Date Movie isn't quite as successful in keeping the gags at the same pace they came in the Scary Movies, but it will certainly satisfy those with a taste for tasteless humor. The wisp of a story involves fat girl Julia Jones, played by Alyson Hannigan, who quickly becomes as thin and pretty as she was in the American Pie movies and on TV's Buffy the Vampire Slayer. You'll lose count how many movie references writer/directors Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer throw in her path as she searches for true love in a world gone mad. Hitch, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Meet the Fockers, King Kong, Lord of the Rings, When Harry Met Sally, Pretty Woman, Bridget Jones' Diary, and Kill Bill, are just a few of the movies that get unkindly homage. There's also plenty of flatulence, mild sexual ribaldry, and the kind of bad taste humor that will utterly delight the pubescent and teenage audience this movie was made for. --Ted Fry

The movie probably works best on an airplane or in other situations, where your requirements are low and you just need something for passing the time.

The basic plot revolves around an initially less than attractive 177kg girl of Greek / Japanese / Indian / Jewish heritage, waitressing in the family restaurant dreaming of a prince to marry her. After an extreme makeover and a dating show the appropriate prince is found, so all that is necessary is overcoming the obstacles to marriage such as her own parents, as well as the best man.

The movie has some fairly funny scenes and some cheap digs that will age quickly but overall it seems the quality of writing is of the level that would generally get rejected from something like American Pie (Ultimate Edition) [1999] [DVD], let alone from anything more high brow.

In the end you are likely to groan or roll your eyes more often than laugh, so really do not enter with high expectations and you may just be fine - it kills time well enough, if there is nothing else on. I would however recommend to avoid buying it on DVD - I can hardly picture someone watching this over and over again.

Not quite as good as I remembered it to be.
some of the gags went on - ok we get it. - and some of them were just shoe horned in. The lead guy was just about up to the task - but only just. In fact the more I think about it the more Im inclined to only give it 3 stars. Definitely as I've just remembered the wedding planner sequence and it just was not funny.
Perhaps the problem is there are just so many of these films they all tend to blend in to a generic entity. I think we need a rest from them now, but as long as the dating generation need 'safe' movies to go to there will always be tickets sold.
ACID TEST: would I buy again/recommend - no

Date Movie should be shown non-stop to all captured Al Qaeda prisoners - only mass-murdering terrorists deserve the kind of cruel and unusual punishment this film dishes out from start to finish. Let me be perfectly clear about this: Date Movie may be the worst movie ever made; it's certainly the worst comedy ever even conceived of. You may cry, you may scream, you may even go insane at the infinite stupidity of this film, but you will not laugh or grin or even smirk at the abysmal antics on display here - not once. It doesn't matter if you get any of the jokes or recognize all of the films and other things being spoofed because this movie thoroughly blows chunks. The only thing I got out of this movie was an awful headache. If you ask me, everyone associated with this film should be banned from the entertainment industry for at least ten years - if not for life. Had the first fish who ever crawled out of the water known that millions of years of evolution would give birth to Date Movie, he would have stayed in the ocean.

Whatever happened to that sweet and charming girl we came to know during the first couple of years of Buffy the Vampire Slayer? Why and how did it ever come to this: Alyson Hannigan humiliating herself in such raunchy, tasteless, unoriginal drivel? She can still light up the screen with that smile of hers, and she certainly put a lot into her performance, but I'm embarrassed for her here. She plays an overweight, very disgusting waitress from a mixed family (boy, is it mixed) who is desperate to find her Prince Charming. After convincing Hitch (Tony Cox) to help her find love, she's given a complete overhaul (literally), plunked down into a reality dating show, and actually finds a man.

Well, you get the idea from some of the other reviews, but if anyone is considering seeing this, the only possible justification is to see what might be the worst film of all time. The trouble is that it's supposed to be a comedy. Seeing a horror film or a melodrama that is unintentionally funny is one thing. That can be enjoyable. Seeing a comedy that isn't funny AT ALL is something different. There is no pleasure whatsoever that can be gained from watching this, unless you are the sort of person who giggles watching paint dry.

Don't get the idea that I don't enjoy spoofs. Airplane!, Young Frankenstein, The Naked Gun, even the original Scary Movie (some of whose writers - though obviously not the more talented ones - came up with this dross) were all great. This, however, isn't. Having someone look like Owen Wilson or Napoleon Dynamite is not in itself funny...you have to go further and actually have them DO something comical: that's what a spoof is supposed to be. As for the film's one potentially good gag - redoing a well-known romantic comedy scene with the male and female roles reversed - well, that could work once. Here, the writers try it several million times.

Humour is a very individual thing, but anyone finding this funny should let psychologists run a few experiments on them: they are clearly deeply unusual people.

That said, I hear Epic Movie is even worse.

I don't mind silly comedies and my expectations were low for this one, but I expected to at least be somewhat entertained. But the film failed miserably on every level. I don't think I laughed once. What's the point in "spoofing" movies like "Meet the Fockers" if you can't write even one good joke? The only good thing about "Date Movie" was that it only took about 73 minutes before the end credits started to roll. I saw it for free but it was a waste of time.
