Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

In a nutshell:
The official game of the 2006 World Cup has all the stadiums, players and kits of the real thing, but the biggest surprise is that it actually improves upon the usual FIFA gameplay too. So if England does not win in real life, you can at least make sure they do in the virtual world.

The lowdown:
. In previous years, FIFA Word Cup games have meant little more than a cut down version of the existing FIFA game, however this version features not just the 32 teams from the finals but the chance to play as any of the other 95 countries from the qualifying rounds. There’s even the option to replay historic World Cups – although only a handful of older players are included. In terms of gameplay things have been noticeably speeded up and there’s even an alternative control system that exactly mimics rival Pro Evolution Soccer. PES fans will still be suspicious but this really is the best FIFA yet.

Most exciting moment:
Reliving the glory of 1966 with the current England team and then going on to do the same thing in this year’s Cup as well!

Since you ask:
Many of the England team, including Wayne Rooney, claim to be video games fans and many have mentioned playing the FIFA games between real matches.

The bottom line:
A genuine improvement on FIFA 06 with the usual top notch EA presentation.
Harrison Dent

4.0 out of 5 stars A girl's point of view, 15 Jul 2006
Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
I'm not a huge fan of sports games, I've played my share of football games, some good some bad. I really got into the World Cup this year and decided to get the game...I've just finished my exams and I was bored...
The game (as one reviewer said) is very addictive and whole days have been wasted playing this game. The controls are a little confusing but once you get the hang of them they're not that hard...The graphics are the best I have seen on any football game, and the commentary is rather good for canned responses! For die hard sports games fans this will be an average and easy game. For me, I find it fun, addictive and fun...If stress inducing at times!

Now I just have to lead Portugal to the finals and hey, maybe life will imitate art!

1.0 out of 5 stars Just get out the old subbuteo - its far less trouble, 29 May 2006

This is the single worst football game I have ever played.

First of all, the user interface isn't designed for use by humans, some of the arrows scroll the wrong way, the main menu is just a long series of confusing titles (what's wrong with an 'Options' menu), with buttons and menus all over the screen, then starting the world cup is the most tedious and confusing task you'll ever have to do.

Once you finally get a team selected and start the game, you're given a fancy intro which would look good if it weren't for the childish attempt at rendering baloons. Then the whistle sounds, and even then for some unkown reason you are forced to wait a few seconds before your players register you pressing for a kick-off. And this is the most major problem - around 30-50% of the time your controls are just not picked up, or sometimes they are picked up by the next player, so instead of passing it to the player you pass the ball twice so it ends up with the other team. Then the shooting, with absolutely no indication of how to aim under shooting, its just a lottery as to whether your players are aiming for the net or the airspace above germany, in fact you'll cover more german airspace in the course of one match than any budget airline could hope to cover.

When the match finally finishes, you are given a series of statistics, randomly placed, naturally, and nothing you press seems to get you out of that hell-hole. And after that is when you really start to hate the makers of this game. You are then given a menu with "points-scoring", a ridiculous system of awarding your team completely meaningless points for things like "scoring 2 goals in 1 match" and "not having any red cards", and once you finally get out of that menu, there is another series of "would you like to save?" "are you sure?" "would you like to overwrite?" "are you sure?", before finally returning to a sort of overview of what's happened, and if you manage to figure out how to get the results table you'll be crowned a genius. But its ok because by this stage you'll be quiting the game, never to return, and writing a negative review on amazon...

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Superb!!, 29 Mar 2007

Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
NOTE: For anyone thinking of buying this on the strength of the trailer (top of the screen) it's worth pointing out straight away that is clearly NOT the PC version of the game. Amazon need to remove this in my opinion as it is misleading. I am guessing that it is PS2 footage because (a) it has better graphics and is smoother than the PC version (b) there's a lot of other fancy stuff that the PC version certainly DOES NOT have eg: flames shooting out of the top of the stadium during the team line-up.

I bought this game last summer and absolutely love it. I've spent many many happy hours playing this game (never viewed as wasted time, its always well used!). I wasn't sure I would find a game I loved as much as World Cup 98, but I did and its better than I had hoped. The playability is excellent, likeness in the players is very good, the chants are really good and I love the sound of the ball clattering onto the posts or cross bar!!

The controls are basically the same, however, there are additional keys (if playing on keyboard) which once you get used to and master, really add to the enjoyment. It took me a little while but now its no trouble performing a dummy step-over, a turn or some other fancy trick. It doesn't always work in getting past the opposition, but it looks good!

For me, the key thing in any football game is playability. There's no point in having fancy graphics and clever moves if the game is hard to get used to and difficult to play. 2006 FIFA World Cup has great playability and I can't really think of many criticisms apart from possibly the darkness of some of the pitches and the utterly pointless features you can unlock like "Slow Motion". Who the hell wants to play the game in slow motion?!?

I also didn't really see the point of being able to unlock classic players and kits. Pointless. Yeah, you could moan about the repetitive commentary, but jeez, come on people, remember its only a computer game, its not real!! I found Clive Tyldsley and Andy Townsend a lot less annoying than Motty and Chris Waddle on World Cup 98!

I do like the fact that you can play right from the start of qualifying. This means you can qualify as Wales or Scotland or even Kazahkstan if you wanted to! I think this opens the game out to a much wider audience as I'm sure the Scots and the Welsh football gamers are sick to death of having to play as England (if they wanted to play as England that is!).

I also like the various objectives you can complete within the game. Again this varies the game play as I found myself getting obsessed with completing them which although is a bit sad, it made the whole game a bit more interesting and varied. I have found that the Global Challenges are absolutely solid though. You really need to be a really skilled player to complete even just a few of them, let alone complete a gold medal objective! Needless to say I am still struggling and have only completed about 3 of them to gold medal standard, but again, at least its maintaining my interest in the game overall.
