Manufacturer's Description

The Linksys Wireless-G Pan/Tilt/Zoom Video Camera sends live video through the Internet to a web browser anywhere in the world! The advanced MPEG-4 video compression produces a high-quality, high-framerate, up to 640x480 video stream. MPEG-4 encoding facilitates good video quality in varying bandwidth environments. WVC200 also supports MJPEG compression for video, providing good video quality at high bandwidth rates. The comprehensive video features include an IR filter cut which allow you to see the images in low or no light environments when an IR lamp is used. Snapshots (in JPEG format) of the image can be taken and saved. Snapshots can also be scheduled and sent to an FTP server. If you want the video to be visible from a remote location or from the Internet, you can open an appropriate port on the Router, and then create password protected accounts to manage access to the camera, or leave it wide open for the world to see. Support for Dynamic DNS lets you access your camera using an easy-to-remember "name", even while using a dynamic IP address. The Pan/Tilt and digital zoom function allows you to remotely control the camera movement and focus, giving you maximum flexibility remotely. Up to 10 simultaneous users can have access to the camera at any point in time. Software is included for multiple camera monitoring and recording to your hard drive with advanced search by time and date. Recording can be set up to record by motion trigger, manual or schedule recording and playback on Windows Media Player without the need for a proprietary player. You can also turn on Security Mode, which tells the camera to send a message with a short video attached to up to three email addresses whenever it detects motion in its field of view. You can then log onto the live video stream if the situation warrants. Wireless security features include WEP and WPA.

3.0 out of 5 stars Unreliable disappointment, 25 Oct 2008
I bought this camera just for home use... I travel a lot and wanted to keep a reassuring eye on my home and pets (fish.... before anyone calls the RSPCA). As a result. reviews about the noisy motor and the restrictions on users that can connect to it didn't really bother me too much.

Was does bother me, now that I have the product, is the unreliability of the wireless connection. I have played with the settings, reduced the image quality, changed the image type etc and I am lucky if I can connect to the camera 1 out of 3 attempts before it times out. It seems to lock up pretty often as well so even after I have made the connection simple tasks like changing the camera angle seem to lock it out. Sometimes closing my browser allows me to reconnect, sometimes not.

I am currently testing it plugged into the router and it seems a great deal more reliable that way... but that's not really what I paid for. I paid for a wireless camera.

The video can be viewed via IE or Firefox. Firefox is more reliable and the image refresh is quicker, but you don't get the full range of camera control options such as zoom or single frame capture.

When you can get it to work the image quality is pretty good (though don't bother with the digital zoom which is next to useless).

The stand it comes with to hold it upright is flimsy and far too lightweight to support the camera firmly. The slightest jolt or breeze knocks the camera off the stand. The build of the camera itself is neat and tidy and seems fairly solid.

The future of the camera in my home is, as yet, undecided. I plan on giving it a couple of week's trial to see if I can get it to perform how it should. If not, Amazon will be getting this item back.

4.0 out of 5 stars Linksys IP camera, 25 April 2007
Great little camera. Easily configured it through wired to set it up on router by wifi with encryption. When set to high quality the picture isn't bad. Has a couple of nice extras like DDNS which can update your DynDNS account periodically, and e-mail alerts of video footage on motion sensing directly to your mailbox via your SMTP server, media player downloads the appropriate add-on to play the file type. Also sends snapshot to your FTP server when desired. The web interface for live viewing and setup isn't too bad, although it requires IE plug-ins which I haven't found for Firefox. Cons: require IE, a little too noisy on rotation to be discreet, not so good in low light, have to rely on in built log-in for security once firewall port is opened and forwarded. Worth 200 quid? Well I wasn't looking for a serious security camera, but a nice toy/gadget it is and impressed so far with the images so I'd say yes.

3.0 out of 5 stars Use caution when buying this camera, 27 Feb 2008
By S. Landricombe (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Bought this camera recently only to find it was completely innapropriate for my purposes. I had intended it to be a public access webcam and after reading in the product description that I could "leave it wide open for the world to see" I assumed this would be possible. And it is, sort of, as long as you ignore the following points:

1. It will only allow 10 people to view the feed at once.
2. there is no way (without a lot of hassle and work arounds) to embed the feed to your own web page, You can only view it via its built in administration page.
3. You can't allow unrestricted access so it will always prompt for a username and password.

As long as none of these points matter to you then it's a decent camera - good picture, nice features. Be aware it's a digital zoom though so drastically loses quality when you use it.
