Synopsis
TOTO THE HERO tells the tale of a man so consumed by feelings of resentment and envy towards his neighbour, that he misses out on life itself. Thomas has long-harboured the belief that he was switched at birth with another newborn, Alfred, in the aftermath of a nursery fire. While Alfred goes on to lead a successful life--his family is very wealthy--Thomas blames his misfortune squarely on Alfred and plots his murder. Often cited as one of the best and most influential films of the ‘90s, TOTO's dark mix of child-like fantasy and caustic humour enables greater empathy with the characters. The film marks the feature-length debut of Belgian director Jaco van Dormael.

5.0 out of 5 stars amazing, not just excellent, 6 Jan 2007
It seems to me the critics above are mainly focused on one particular side of the plot - Toto and his "misfortune" being a brother in shadow...Whereas the story is contrary different - this is a story about the things in life, which we value when they got lost. This film is a masterpiece on this subject and I will always remember the red ribbon and the nice female face, which Toto was dreaming about all his life. I will also remember the scene in the war time Belgium "supermarket" and the face of his mother went there to some shopping and the sudden "makeup" on her forehead...These are the metaphors, which give the film an immense impact. Watch this film and you'd never regret!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Forgotten 90s Masterpiece and an inspiration for so many films to come , 30 Aug 2008

(REAL NAME)
When Toto le Héros was released in 1991 someone greeted it as a contemporary 'Citizen Kane'. The first long feature by Belgian director Jaco Van Dormael has a lot in common with Welles' movie. Not only the story is an attempt to make sense of one's life through memories, this film also employs a similar iconic and narrative symbolism (possibly even a more intense one) to enhance the sense of the 'script' of life taking shape and revealing itself through memories, dreams, fantasies. Van Dormael's vision and story is a stunning achievement of modern cinema that anticipates a fashion that would then be used, abused and overused in the 90s by many young directors: borrowing narration/editing techniques from the 'nouvelle vague'(s) and translating them into a friendlier format for a wider audience, within a slick and polished overall structure. Unlike many of its followers, Toto le Héros manages to be an artistic success, condensing drama, comedy, surrealism and poetry into a consistent vision. It's a film about identity, memory, destiny, obsession and the personal search for meaning. You'll see all this through the main character's eyes, but at the end, even if there's a 'resolution', nothing's really revealed and the sense of mystery is preserved.
