Synopsis

Ferris Bueller (Matthew Broderick) is a tricky but harmless fast-talker. But he knows how to have fun, which is exactly what he sets out to do when he feigns illness and talks his parents into letting him stay home from school. The perpetually lucky Ferris enlists his hypochondriac best friend, Cameron Frye (Alan Ruck), into springing his girlfriend, Sloane Peterson (Mia Sara), from class, and the three embark on a raucous downtown Chicago adventure. From Wrigley Field to the Art Institute of Chicago to a Polish pride parade, Ferris and his friends make the most of their day off. But Ferris, Sloane, and Cameron might not get away with playing hooky. Ferris's sister, Jeanie (Jennifer Grey), is determined to prove that Ferris is faking sick and make him pay for it, and the bumbling school dean, Ed Rooney (Jeffrey Jones), is sure that Ferris is pulling a fast one. Another classic from writer-director John Hughes (SIXTEEN CANDLES, THE BREAKFAST CLUB), this film features a star turn from Broderick as the charismatic Ferris. Watch for Charlie Sheen as the juvenile delinquent in the police station and comedian Louie Anderson in a brief appearance as a flower deliveryman. Conniving Shermer, Ill. high school student Bueller spends his ninth school absence in the company of his kvetchy best friend Cameron and girlfriend Sloane, tearing through downtown Chicago on a mad quest for fun. The ruse seems perfect, right down to Cameron's dad's borrowed Ferrari, but Ferris' nemesis, high school principal Ed Rooney, is determined to bring the truants to justice.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you're gonna bunk school, this is the way to do it, 15 Jul 2008
By Surrey Book Worm (Surrey, England) - See all my reviews
A brilliant film that stands the test of time. This movie depicts a day in the life of Ferris, who decides to take the day off school by outwitting the adults in his life. This is Matthew Broderick at his best and features Jennifer Grey before Patrick Swayze got his hands on her in "Dirty Dancing".

5.0 out of 5 stars Sloane dear, come to Daddy, 10 Dec 2006

I am afraid I can not go into too much detail as the movie counts on surprise and anticipation.

Three high school comrades Ferris Bueller (Mattew Brodrick), Cameron Frye (Alan Ruck), and Sloane Peterson (Mia Sara) take the day off. They have several adventures which take them to many fun locations among which are a parade, restaurant, and just skirt being detected. Even though this is a teenage fantasy everyone can enjoy it.

Ben Stein gives the performance of his life as the enthusiastic economics teacher. "Anybody...anybody?"

Meanwhile the principal Ed Rooney (Jeffrey Jones), which knows of Ferris' devious ways, investigates and is foiled at every turn.

Ferris' jealous sister Jeanie (Jennifer Grey) has a few adventures of her own which include meeting a boy in the police station (Charlie Sheen.) She eventually comes to appreciate Ferris' ways.

Naive parents Katie (Cindy Pickett) and Tom (Lyman Ward) move blissfully through the movie only wanting what is best for their under the weather son.

For those musically inclined the movie is packed with great tunes.

Want a gummy bear Mr. Rooney?

3.0 out of 5 stars a 3.5 out of 5 movie, 23 Mar 2007

released in 1986,ferris buellers day off has gained solid praise and its importance in the era of the 1980s cinema world is pretty high but i think in some ways the film is overrated.
For the first quarter if not a little further i found matthew brodericks character ferris a little too smarmey,in fact i wanted to slap his face off, however to be fair as the film progressed i started to take to him and the way he acts on the band float was great, one minor detail as well is that the film isnt a galaxy of laughs, sure i found myself smiling but this didnt blow my eyes out with chuckles.
The film follows high school senior ferris who fakes illness to get off school to head to the big city with two friends to have fun,the film is directed by john hughes and uses childish pranks that he would later mastr with home alone, the headmaster searching for ferris is a little slapstick but not unlike marv and harry in home alone.
For the most part the film is stylish and some of ferris' stunts to avoid getting caught are cool ideas and the film is hardly a chore to watch, but all in all it isnt quite up there with the classic 80s films but it shouldnt hide in the corner all sheepish and bashful either.
