4.0 out of 5 stars Great Music, Poor Packaging, 11 April 2006
By Coincidence Vs Fate (Warwickshire, UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
If you're a Beatles fan then you'll already have all the tracks available on this boxset. This is the first time these American albums have been available on CD. Every CD includes both the mono and stereo versions of the albums, which is a nice touch.

As I'd got the UK versions anyway, I only bought this for completion.

I don't need to review the music, you all know how good the Beatles are. The packaging is a little disappointing though, the CDs are in card sleeves and housed in a flimsy box. There's an interesting booklet though recounting tales of American Beatlemania, so I shouldn't be too down on the set.

Great for the music, just be careful with the box.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great apart from faulty masters!, 21 April 2006
Buyers in the UK beware! Two of the discs in this boxset, namely Beatles V1 and Rubber Soul contain the incorrect mono masters - a replacement system is in operation for US customers. I have seen no such scheme in place for UK customers. Apart from that the new stereo mixes are fantastic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential? Hmmm, If your a fan then yes, 12 Jun 2006
By 70s rock fan "spike123" (uk) - See all my reviews

Ok we have all heard how the earlier pressings of this set had the wrong mono mixes. Want to know how to tell? Easy way is to put on track 21 off Rubber Soul. False start like the stereo version? Congrats you have the faulty first pressing, return it for the proper version. How to tell if the one you are buying is the correct version? Well here is EMI playing "What fault?" The only way to tell if you have the correct second batch set is by a weeny, weeny SK1 after the catalogue number at the bottom of the yellow sticker on the front, talk about sneeky!!
Well thats sorted, what about the cds? Well not really for the casual fan, the UK versions and best ofs will keep them happy. Buy this after all the proper UK versions of the albums and then delight in hearing them in that weird stereo of old (yes I know all about how George Martin only separated voices and instruments for balance later on the mono).
I love the old stereo versions, the bleeding of the voices onto the instrument channel, as an echo. The being able to use them for karakoe, the spaciousness that having the music spread across the left and right soundstage gives you and yes the instrumental tracks/starts of Help.
So not for the newbie, but fans will love he variety and cool sound of the Beatles like I and my friends listened to way back when I bought all the Beatle albums in Stereo.
