Amazing , 7 Mar 2007
I have to admit that I am pretty poor at writing reviews but was forced to by the simple lack of them for this recording. So please, don't expect a prose piece consisting of any deep or insightful analysis of this recording - such a thing is beyond someone who believes that music - especially Wagner's music - must be experienced and cannot be described in prose.
And so to the recording; simply this is an amazing interpretation of Parsifal and Thielemann is simply one of of Wagner's greatest interpreters. Heavy praise perhaps but I often feel while listening to his Wagner that this is how Furtwangler would have sounded given the recording mechanisms of the 21st century.
Parsifal is perhaps interpreted as Wagner's most directly "spiritual" works - infusing his interests in Christianity, Buddhism, the neopaganism of his time and - his version - of Schopenhauerian philosophy (this is Wagner after all and of course he felt that he could improve on Schopenhauer's thought. I often wonder what Schopenhauer's response would have been if Wagner had ever actually sent him the intended letter explaining how much he admired Schopenhauer's philosophy but that it could be improved if he only...?)and indeed, this is how the best Wagnerian interpretors perform it. However, the truth is that - in my opinion - it is normally T&S, as normally performed, that seems to project whatever feelings of "spiritually" or "transcendence" Wagner intended much more then Parsifal. However, here at last we have a Parsifal that manages to lift the listener to those heavy states that transcend the normal, everyday realm of existence.
This recording is incredible "cheap", for goodness sake, buy it and experience - honest..

No problems with the stage noises at all, 2 Dec 2007
I was looking for a copy of Parsifal, and not being familiar with the many performances of Wagner operas available, I alighted on this one as very reasonably priced for a 4 CD set. I was encouraged by its great soloists and conductor but somewhat puzzled by the 2 existing reviews of this set, one giving it 5 stars and one giving it just 1. Anyway, I decided to take the plunge for at this price it seemed worth the gamble.
I am a relative newcomer to Wagner, only recently having become acquainted with his works, but I can honestly say I have been blown away with this recording. The soloists, orchestra and ensemble pieces are all excellent, I find the performance engaging and moving, the CD is well packaged with an excellent booklet with synopsis, a short essay and full libretto. I thoroughly enjoyed it at first listening and haven't been able to leave it alone since.
A word about the stage nosies referred to by another reviewer. I had expected to find them offputting but in fact they had the opposite effect on me. I found that they added to that sense of being there at a great live performance, enhancing my imaging of the drama. True, if you don't like stage noises, there are quite a lot of them and so you'd be better going for a studio version, but I for one, found them to be no problem at all.
All in all I think this is an excellent recording and superb value. If you love Wagner, or if like me you are a beginner, buy this now.

Impressive, beautiful, 7 Mar 2009
Firstly, this set sounds very good indeed. It is true the stage noises are louder than is usual for a recording but I wasn't distracted by this(except listening to it while driving once and thinking my engine was making a strange noise!).
Secondly, it truly is an enthralling performance that engages one from the opening bars and leaves you blissfully satisfied at the end. The singers are very strong. I don't know other performances of this work but have certainly been rewarded a hundred times by this one.
