4.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant little point and shoot camera., 18 Oct 2006
By David Spooner (Wiltshire, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I was looking for a point and shoot camera that was small enough to take with me when I went out, everyone I spoke to recommended the Ixus series. I decided to go with the Ixus 60 and I'm glad I did! Initial impressions of the camera were good, it was a beautiful little thing that would fit in a pocket without any problems - not that you would want to let this little camera roam free around your pocket without protection. On the back the first thing you notice is the large 2.5" LCD screen which even copes well in bright light, this can be used to preview the pictures before taking but if your more traditional you do have the option to use a normal optical view finder unlike on the Ixus 65. My only complaint with the optical view finder is its very small and hard to use effectively, if this doesn't bother you and you're more than happy to use the LCD most of the time then it can't be faulted in this respect. The only other complaint I have with this camera is the lack of customisable options - it has the standard colour profiles, exposure time etc but for more advanced options you either have to dig or there not there but then again it is sold as a point and shoot. I bought mine along with a 2gb SD card and the Canon DCC-60 case (definitely worth getting if your getting this camera). The pictures taken by this camera are of a high quality and a useful feature is the ability to take widescreen resolution pictures - perfect for those of us with widescreen monitors. All in all a very good camera with very few faults, would recommend this camera to anyone who was looking for a camera that is small, nice looking and takes good quality pictures.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb camera, 12 Jun 2006
I recently bought the Canon Ixus 60 just before going away on holiday for two weeks and have been very impressed by its performance. Much of the camera's functionality has been covered in other reviews on this site so I will largely concentrate on aspects not dealt with elsewhere. As is typical with the Ixus range, the build quality is excellent and the camera oozes class. The 2.5 inch screen is excellent even in low light and tends to make the small viewfinder redundant. My only concern regarding the camera's construction is the USB cover that feels flimsy and I would recommend the use of an SD card reader. The camera is light and once a case has been purchased, the Ixus is barely noticeable when worn on a belt. The supplied 16 Mb card is fairly useless and you will need to invest in something larger.

Controls: the physical controls are minimal, giving the camera an uncluttered appearance and although this requires more use of the menus, these are colour-coded and easy to use. Some reviews on other sites have criticised the Ixus 60 for being light on features but for a point-and-shoot consumer camera it probably still has more functionality than most users could ask for. Despite being small, it is comfortable to hold though I feel that the supplied wrist strap is worth using.

Image quality: image quality is excellent both for well-lit outdoor scenes and for indoor use with or without a flash. Although there are some image manipulation modes (sepia, b&w, colour substitution, colour enhancement, etc), most of this manipulation can be carried out with more finesse using Photoshop. With 6 million pixels to play with you can use image editing software to crop your images by a surprising amount before losing resolution for 6x4 prints which is what most owners are probably interested in. The Auto mode is ideal for 90% of pictures and the Manual mode caters for a wide range of scene types. Be aware however, that if you set some unusual settings in Manual mode, these will still be active when you next switch on the camera.

Speed: the speed of this camera has been mentioned elsewhere and using a high-speed card, a 1 Gb Sandisk Extreme III, I was able to shoot for long periods at 2 frames per second in Continuous mode. Allied to this, the self-timer allows you to specify the number of pictures to be taken in quick succession once the timer has completed. This can be useful to capture your subjects in a more unguarded pose after the initial picture has been taken.

Battery: the battery life is very good though there's nothing like experimenting with a new gadget to flatten a battery and although charging with the supplied compact charger takes no more than 90 minutes, a spare battery is worth considering for when you are away from base.

Documentation: the printed documentation is adequate but unfortunately the advanced documentation is only available in a 130-page PDF file. As a result of ignorance, there was one feature of the camera that I initially found intensely annoying and that was its behaviour in Playback mode. With the camera on my lap, I noticed that some pictures would randomly rotate, flicking back and forth intermittently. This looked like a firmware problem until I got home and found out about the Auto Rotate feature. This senses the orientation of the camera body and rotates the picture if you rotate the camera. If the camera is lying flat, it loses its orientation and the pictures can randomly flip. I still cannot see the point of this feature but the Auto Rotate function can be disabled in both Record and Playback modes.

Summary: this is a stunning camera. It looks good, feels good and delivers excellent pictures. I highly recommend it. Just remember to read the manual ...

5.0 out of 5 stars Tiny marvel, 18 Oct 2006
By I. D. Watson "watsonian" (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I bought an Ixus 60 to replace an Ixus V2 which has given me sterling service and produced excellent photographs over the past three years. The new camera is smaller, lighter, has a 300% larger CCD sensor, a 100% bigger LCD screen, a 50% longer zoom and is cheaper than its predecessor. If you want a small, tough, high quality camera that you can rely on then buy one of these. It has an optical viewfinder which is very useful, especially in bright sunshine, when the LCD screen image cannot be seen easily. Buy a 1Gb memory card, a spare battery (there is still no battery meter display - a quirk of the Ixus series) and a case to preserve this beautiful piece of engineering. Highly recommended.
