Amazon.co.uk Review

The Crying Game offers a rare and precious movie experience. The film is an unclassifiable original that surprises, intrigues, confounds, and delights you with its freshness, humor, and honesty from beginning to end. It starts as a psychological thriller, as IRA foot soldier Fergus (the incomparable Stephen Rea) kidnaps a British soldier (Forest Whitaker) and waits for the news that will determine whether he executes his victim or sets him free. As the night wears on, a peculiar bond begins to form between the two men. Later, the movie shifts tone and morphs into something of a romantic comedy as Fergus unexpectedly becomes involved with the soldier's girlfriend Dil (Jaye Davidson) and discovers more about himself, and human nature in general, than he ever dreamed possible. Like Spielberg's E.T. , The Crying Game was supposed to be director Neil Jordan's "little, personal movie," the one he just had to make, even though no studio was willing to give him money because the story was so unusual. Instead, it became a surprise popular sensation, thanks in part to Miramax's cleverly provocative campaign playing up the hush-hush nature of the movie's big secret. The performances (including Miranda Richardson as one of Fergus's IRA colleagues) are subtly shaded, and the writing and direction are tantalizingly rich and suggestive; you're always trying to figure out the characters' true motives and feelings--even when they themselves are fully aware of their own motives and feelings. The Crying Game is a wise, witty, wondrous treasure of a movie. Director Jordan's credits include Mona Lisa, Interview with the Vampire, Michael Collins, and The Butcher Boy. --Jim Emerson

Synopsis

This highly original film put screenwriter/director Neil Jordan on the international map. The story begins at a carnival in Ireland with British soldier Jody (Forest Whitaker) kidnapped by IRA terrorists Jude (Miranda Richardson) and Fergus (Stephen Rea). Fergus is assigned to guard Jody, and they become friends. After the kidnapping goes horribly wrong, Fergus escapes to London to track down Jody's girlfriend, Dil (Jaye Davidson), to fulfill a promise to Jody and ends up falling in love with her. The only problem--well, it's not the only problem--is Jude has also come to London with news that the IRA is after Fergus and has a dangerous new mission in mind.
A sensation during its original release for its controversial plot development, THE CRYING GAME went on to win several awards and remains a tender and thrilling viewing experience. Jordan's script bristles with wit and intelligence, and the plentiful symbolic imagery shows the hand of a true artist. Ian Wilson's photography beautifully captures the various locales of London and rural Ireland. Boy George sings the title song, and the rest of the memorable score is by Anne Dudley.

4.0 out of 5 stars Know all there is to know about..., 28 Aug 2009
By Mutt (Ankara, Turkey) - See all my reviews
Irish filmmaker and novelist Neil Jordan bounced back from a string of box-office flops with this unconventional romantic thriller that bombed in Britain in part because of its sympathetic portrayal of Irish terrorists but went great guns in the U.S. where it won him the Best Original Screenplay Oscar.

Stephen Rea puts in a powerful and sympathetic lead performance with able support from the magnificent Miranda Richardson alongside a roll call of British stalwarts that includes Adrian Dunbar, Jim Broadbent, Ralph Brown and Tony Slattery as well as a curiously miscast Forest Whitaker and an uncastable Jaye Davidson.

The film maker's commitment eventually paid off with the film and it's shock twist becoming an established part of pop culture through numerous references but the shoestring budget and turbulent production process shows on screen with a lack of pace and continuity that prevents this from being a true classic.

Who knows the secrets of the human heart?

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must See, The Lead Performances Have To Be Seen To Be Believed, 28 Sep 2008
By willow (The Universe) - See all my reviews
The Crying Game is without doubt one of the best British films ever! Stephen Rea gives a career defining performance as the IRA volunteer involved in the kidnap of English soldier (a young but very promising Forest Whitaker).
The start of the movie documents the unusual bond between caputurer & victim, which is played out beautifully on film.
Some events happen that lead Fergus (Rea) to go to London in search of Jody's (Whitaker) glamourous girlfriend.
The movie becomes a love story, quirky & original the performance of Jody's girlfriend is mind blowing.
For me the best thing about the movie is how the character's relate to each other & the depth of every one of them.

In conclusion a great film, I'd recommend it to anyone with a passion for good movies
