3.0 out of 5 stars Far less ultimate than before, but forceful nonetheless., 14 Oct 2006
By J. Poole (The British Isles) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Having followed Ultimate Force religiously since it first aired in 2002, I jumped at the chance to buy Series 3 & 4 for £10. (God bless the CD Warehouse) However, when I sat down to watch Series 4, the enthusiasm slowly drained from my face and my jaw drooped lower and lower as the episodes progressed, until the very last one that is.

The original format of a series of Ultimate Force would be six 50-minute episodes which would begin with an often fiery introduction of the bad guys of the week (normally involving hostages being taken). Then 30-minutes of plot and character development would ensue, along with a few laughs, before all coming to a fiery (an often bloody) conclusion. Those were the days.

Series 3 changed the format somewhat by casting out a linear storyline, but still managed to strike the balance between plot, action and character. Then Series 4 came along, and fell victim, like many other long-running action series to: lacklustre story, dismal scripts and second-rate characters trying desperately to emulate characters so stupidly killed off in the opening to S3. The pacing of episodes in S4 becomes plodding and labourious; when the action finally does kick-off , too much has already been done for it to redeem itself. But on the plus side, the last of the unseen episodes plays out like something from the good old days; creating genuine tension, and giving some insight into Henno's virtually unheard-of past.

Overall, UF:S4 slips step by step down the quality ladder as it unfolds, but redeems itself somewhat by its finale. My advice to writers for Series 5: keep with the same cast of characters.

EDIT: 27/3/08 - and thus, it is confirmed Ultimate Force will not be returning for a 5th series; R.I.P. Henno Garvie and the original Red Troop.

4.0 out of 5 stars ultimate force series 4, 6 Oct 2006
Overall not bad however not as good as previous seasons. the episode Charlie Bravo, in particular saw a the trend to political correctness go a step too far. Finn sleeps with Becca and and regrets it. Oh no, can't have that, let's have her give the cad a hard squeeze where it hurts. Suspension of disbelief sent flying through the window. I felt it made Becca's character appear 2-demensional and comic-book-like. Then there was Dempsey having a leisurely stroll during a firefight in a rebel stronghold popping of shots here and there while berating a Columbian army officer. That fight scene was completely at odds with the tactical realism of previous seasons.

The first episode of Season 4 ( the one where Red Troop are tasked to rescue a diplomat's daughters in Uzer Baikal )is much better. Bigger budget and refreshed dialogue were evident and a fleshing out of supporting cast was notable.

My favourite however was The Dividing Line. Gripping action, the sort of tear-up that fans of the series have come to love, underpinned by a thought-provoking and humourous look at the 'special relationship' between us and the yanks. Dave gives the Green Berets a proper verbal carpeting over Torea Bora.Love it! It was pacey, structured and gripping. Overall, I'd say not to be missed, however I'd prefer if the makers stayed truer to the root premise of the show. These are Special Forces. This is fiction. But it's fiction about Special Forces. It need'nt be a vehicle for the advancement of a specific social agenda. The gritty world that Red Troop face with resolve and humour is what viewers find appealing.

give it go.

well i believe series 4 was not shown due to the world cup and all the rubbish reality tv programmes aired after i.e. love island

however i did email itv and questioned this and they came back to me with

"Thank you for your email. We have no further schedule information at
the moment for the remaining episodes of series 4 and have no
information regarding a further commissioning at the moment." basically they havnt got a clue and it seems as thought it might be pulled off the air as we cant access any information on their site
