4.0 out of 5 stars Return of the Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeahs...., 19 Mar 2006

Upon hearing 'Gold Lion', I wondered if it was the new one by Neko Case, whether Laura Veirs had finally rawked out, or whether the New Pornographers had a new one. Shockingly it turned out to be those ubercool Yeah Yeah Yeahs - a band I found hard to like in the past. Karen O and co like many a recent band - Josef Ferdinand, The Storks, Editors, Bloc Party, Radiohead - just seem far too studied. The trauma of having excellent taste in music and influences so obvious you haven't transcended them...Those Yeah Yeah Yeahs seemed unbad, but there was a feeling Bikini Kill/Le Tigre, Lydia Lunch, The Slits, The Raincoats, Siouxsie Sioux, PJ Harvey, Melt Banana and tons of others had previously charted these territories. As the excellent documentary 'Kill Your Idols' demonstrated, there was something severely pseud 'bout those Yeah Yeah Yeahs...

'Gold Lion' is a very good pop-song, a kinda bluesy feel and some call/response anthemic qualities - its feeling is somewhere between Neko Case and the New Pornographers. It's a fine single, though I wonder if it can last those multiple plays, or whether I may as well just listen to 'Mass Romantic' one more time instead? Yeah Yeah Yeah in the meantime

1.0 out of 5 stars Absolute drivel, 20 April 2006
By Mr. H "the-rocker.co.uk" (Embra) - See all my reviews

Sorry, I just don't get it. Ramshackle indie instrumentation straight out of 1986. Screechy unmelodic vocals only a rutting walrus could love, a drum beat Meg White would reject out of hand as too pedestrian. And this is supposed to be good, how?

Now, if it had been some kind of April Fools joke that got out of hand, then that would be worth admiring. Oh, and be warned, the other tracks are even worse. Nurse!
