FIRST SOLO ALBUM PROPER FROM THE STIFF LITTLE FINGERS FRONTMAN.ANYONE BUYING THIS EXPECTING TO HEAR "GUITAR AND DRUM " PART TWO IS IN FOR A SHOCK!THIS ALBUM FINDS JAKE EXPLORING THE UNFAMILIAR TERRITORY OF IRISH , HILLBILLY AND COUNTRY MUSIC. THE MUSIC MIGHT BE DIFFERENT BUT THE SUBJECT MATTER IS STILL VERY MUCH THE SAME-DRINK,WAR AND POLITICS. HE GETS OFF TO A FLYER WITH A COVER OF "DOMINO" WRITTEN BY ANOTHER BELFAST BOY VAN MORRISON."DRINKIN' AGAIN" AND "V.E. DAY" ARE COUNTRY INFLUENCED.I WAS EXPECTING THE STEVE EARLE VARIETY BUT THEY SOUND MORE LIKE HANK WILLIAMS!"GREEN FIELDS OF FRANCE" WILL BE FAMILIAR TO SOME PEOPLE AS IT WAS A PEEL FESTIVE FIFTY FAVOURITE BY THE MEN THEY COULDN'T HANG."THE RIGHT TO FIGHT" AND "CLIFFS OF DOONEEN" ARE IRISH INFLUENCED. "LAND OF OPPORTUNITY" IS THE MOST COMMERCIAL SONG ON THE ALBUM AND SHOULD BE RELEASED AS A SINGLE.THE"COME AWAY, COME AWAY, COME AWAY WITH ME"REFRAIN STICKS IN YOUR BRAIN FOR DAYS AFTERWARDS. "THE WELL BELOW THE VALLEY"IS MY FAVOURITE COVER OF THE FOUR ON THE CD AND WHEN THE GUITAR KICKS IN I CAN JUST IMAGINE A POGO AT GLASGOW KING TUTS.WITH "LANCASHIRE ROSE" HAS JAKE BURNS FINALLY WRITTEN A LOVE SONG? ON CLOSER INSPECTION OF THE LYRICS IT APPEARS TO BE ABOUT HIS DISILLUSIONMENT WITH THE CHAMPAGNE SOCIALISTS WHO ARE RUNNING THIS COUNTRY. "HALF PAST DEAD" IS ANOTHER DRINKING SONG AND THE CD CLOSES WITH A SONG "BELFAST 14" WHICH UNBELIEVABLY IS TWENTY YEARS OLD THIS YEAR BUT STILL SOUNDS JUST AS GREAT.
A BIT OF A MUSICAL DEPARTURE FOR JAKE AND AFTER A FEW LISTENS THIS ALBUM DEFINITELY BECOMES MORE INTOXICATING.

first of all if you are expecting Punk forget it
but if you love clever lyrics and top musicians in a folk/hoedown,thin lizzy celtic styley this could be for you.

So what do you get for you money then Eleven songs,two that fingers fans will know, a reworked Drinkin Again,and Belfast 14 from the Big Wheel days both work well.
A Van the Man song Domino,the brilliant Eric Bogle's Green Fields of France which is very true to the original.
A clever Attack on labour that Billy Bragg would be proud of in Lancashire Rose,and any one who likes a wee drink will love Half Past Dead ,this with Air play admitedly Radio Two would be a hit for sure.
So go on give it a go you wont be disapointed
it will have you jigging and smiling

What a great traditional Irish CD !! It's a cross between The Pogues and The Dubliners with a bit of Van Morrison thrown in for good measure. In fact the first track is a Van Morrison cover which sets the tone for the rest of the CD, excellent. The second track and title track is an old Stiff Little Fingers song. The final track, Belfast 14, is an old Jake Burns and the Big Wheel song. Both have been recorded in the style of this CD, which will soon get you singing along and your feet tapping. Buy it now !!
