1.0 out of 5 stars Best avoided, a glitzy hard-driven soulless Nielsen 4th, 19 Jan 2009
By Mike "dmh220551" (Hampshire, UK) - See all my reviews
By coincidence this Martinon performance of Nielsen's wonderful 4th Symphony from Chicago was one of the first (if not the first) that I ever heard. It was only as I later heard other more idiomatic and more sympathetic interpretations that I came to understand and love this fine work. Martinon's performance is very hard driven, relentlessly fast, and only skates across the surface of the work. Best avoided when there are so many good performances on disc to choose from. Blomstedt with the San Francisco orchestra on Decca is a very safe choice and will reward over the long term. Schonwandt with the Danish Radio orchestra is also very fine, if a little slower than is perhaps normal (I see Naxos are re-releasing these recordings). The late Bryden Thomson on Chandos also gave us a treasurable recording of the 4th along with an excellent and penetrating 6th Symphony.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exciting performances of Nielsen's symphonies, 12 Dec 2008
By Mr. Mark A. Meldon (Somerset UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Morton Gould conducts the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in Nielsen's Secondy Symphony and Jean Martinon in the Fourth. These are "legendary" performances, displaying good structure, and great 1960's analogue sound.

With bonuses of the Helios Overture and The Fog Is lifting, this modestly-priced RCA CD is a great buy for all Nielsen enthusiasts!
