Vibration Reduction is available with 2 different modes. The camera has 23Mb of built-in memory - it is not supplied with either an SD Memory Card or MultiMedia Card.

The Nikon Coolpix P4 offers Auto, Program and Aperture Priority exposure modes plus 9 Advanced Scene Modes (Portrait [Face AF], Portrait, Night Portrait, Landscape, Night landscape, Sunset, Dusk/Dawn, Fireworks show, Close up) and 7 Scene Modes (Party/Indoor, Panorama assist, Beach/Snow, Back light, Museum, Copy, Sports) plus a Best Shot Selector option which will choose the sharpest image for you. The maximum aperture is f2.7 (wide) f5.2 (tele) and the shutter speed range is 1/2000 - 2 secs (maximum of 8 secs in Night Landscape scene mode). There are 4 ISO speeds ranging from 80 to 400 and an Auto option. There are 6 different White Balance presets to choose from (Direct Sunlight, Incandescent, Fluorescent, Cloudy, Shade, Flash), plus an Auto setting and White Balance Preset. The camera offers exposure compensation in ± 2 in 1/3 EV steps and auto-bracketing of both exposure and white balance are available.

The Nikon Coolpix P4 has a normal shooting mode, Self-timer (3 secs. or 10 secs.) and 3 different Continuous modes - Continuous H (approx. 1.8fps), Multi-shot 16 (approx 1.7fps, only available at image size 8M) and Ultra HS (up to 100 pictures at up to 30fps). The contrast, saturation and sharpening can all be customised, and there is a Noise Reduction option. D-Lighting is a playback feature which fixes underexposed and backlit images without harming the properly exposed areas of the image.

The Macro setting allows you to focus on subjects that are as close as 3cms at the wide-angle lens setting. There is a choice of 4 different metering systems - Matrix, Center-Weighted, Spot and Spot AF Area. The camera offers 3 auto-focus systems - Auto, Manual and Center - and you can choose from Single or Full-Time focus. There is an AF assist lamp to help achieve focus in low-light situations. The built-in flash offers 5 different modes (Auto, Auto with Red-eye Reduction (In-Camera Red-Eye Fix), Flash Cancel, Anytime Flash, Slow Sync) and has a range of 0.4-4.0m (W) and 0.4-2.0m (T).

To compose your images, you can use the LCD monitor - there is no optical or electronic viewfinder. The Nikon Coolpix P4 has a 2.5 inch TFT LCD Display which has 150,000 pixels. The Nikon Coolpix P4 can record movies at 640 x 480 pixels, 320 x 240 pixels or 160 x 120, all at 30fps with sound. Vibration Reduction is available in the movie mode. Video is recorded in the Quicktime with audio format. The length of the video is only limited by the size of the memory card that you are using. A histogram is available in both shooting and playback modes. The Nikon Coolpix P4 supports the DPOF (Digital Print Order Format) and PictBridge printing standards, and it connects to a computer via USB 2.0.

The Nikon Coolpix P4's dimensions are 92 (W) × 61 (H) × 31 mm (D) mm, and it weighs 170g without the battery and storage card fitted. The camera is powered by a Rechargeable Li-ion Battery, which has an approximate battery life of 200 shots. There is a plastic tripod mount in the left corner of the bottom of the camera.

Finally, the standard box kit contains a Rechargeable Li-ion Battery, Battery Charger, USB Cable, Audio Video Cable, Strap and PictureProject CD-ROM. Note that you can only store 6 images at the highest quality JPEG setting on the 23Mb built-in memory card. You will therefore need to invest in some memory cards to store your images on.

Product Description
The COOLPIX P3 is a high performance camera that is designed to help you take pictures in demanding situations. Advanced features such as 11 point wide-area Auto Focus combine with an 8.1 megapixel resolution, a 3.5x optical Zoom-Nikkor lens and the latest Wi-Fi capability - technology that enables you to transfer your pictures directly to your computer or a compatible printer without the need for wires and cables. The Optical Vibration Reduction system (VR), an innovation derived from Nikon?s combined experience in nano-technology and professional photography, alleviates the effects of camera shake caused by slight hand movements. This exciting new system ensures image stability when taking pictures or shooting movies. 8.1 megapixel resolution means outstanding images even after enlargement or cropping. 3.5x Zoom-Nikkor lens (35mm equivalent) lets you zoom out to capture expansive landscapes, zoom in for tight portraits, and focus on subjects as close as 4cm from your camera. Optical Vibration Reduction (VR) delivers sharp results when camera shake could be a problem. With VR blurred images in the LCD monitor become clear, making it easier to compose pictures. The system even extends to the capturing of movies, with an Electronic VR function that ensures reliable image stability when shooting action. 11 point wide-area AutoFocus system ensures sharp results in more diverse compositions. Even more pixels have been added to each and every AF sensor, which provides excellent autofocus performance in low light. Aperture Priority scene mode lets you choose your aperture so you can take control over depth of focus and the camera selects the best shutter speed for optimal exposure. Continuous shooting at up to 1.8 frames per second. Perfect for shooting moving subjects with absolute clarity. Wi-Fi enables you to send pictures to your computer as soon as they are taken, or to store them in your memory card and then transfer them later to your computer or

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent camera, 7 May 2006
By Craig Brady "solaris17" (Birmingham, England.) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Was torn between buying the nikon P4 or waiting for the Fuji Finepix F30 (available sometime in May or June i think). In the end i decided to go for the Nikon and so far i've been very pleased with my choice. The main selling point for the Nikon P4 is probably the Vibration Reduction system and having already used it quite extensively i've got to say it works like a dream, hand held pictures taken at 1/4 or even 1/2 a second come out pin sharp and i've even managed a hand held picture at 2 seconds which was still very acceptable! There are lots of other very useful features such as exposure bracketing, white balance bracketing, lots of scene modes (the landscape mode allows you to stitch pictures together without a problem). 'Best Shot Selector' allows you to take upto 10 consectutive pictures with the camera only saving the sharpest, very useful when camera shake may be a problem.
The quality of the pictures are excellent and noise is well controlled right up to 200ISO with 400ISO still being more than usable (i'd recommend using a program such as 'Neat Image' to remove any remaining noise). Flash pictures have also come out well exposed without faces being washed out, the red eye reduction seems to work very well also.
One minor niggle, not with the camera but with the supplied software (Nikon Picture Project). None of my pictures look sharp when displayed on my computer monitor? although they look fine when using other software such as 'Picasa2', i've no idea why this is, has anyone got any ideas?.
Excellent price and service from Amazon.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nikon coolpix p4, 30 April 2006
By N. willink (exeter uk) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Much cheaper than the 7.1 mb coolpix I had before; sharpness of pix much more reliable; haven't seen a difference using vr mode or not; I like the fact you can tell how many pix you have left.
quality is generally very good; I like the automatic histogram when using A or P mode. I also like the time-lapse movie bit - again quality very pleasing.
I'm not so sure about keeping the battery and card in the same area - it also didn't seem to be too secure; the cover loosened itself twice during my walk around the countryside.
Also, it seemed to freeze on three occasions! Nothing worked until I dislodged the battery.
Having said all this, the quality is superb and the speed reasonably quick

4.0 out of 5 stars Ticks most of the boxes - just wish it had bluetooth, 9 Sep 2006
By Jon Wright (Vietnam) - See all my reviews
I've been a satisfied user of the Coolpix 3100 for three years now and I just decided to upgrade to the P4. I've been way too busy to seriously explore the camera so I'm writing this review at quite an early stage - but so far I can say I'm very happy.

The main criteria for me on selecting a replacement for my old workhorse were:

It uses SD cards. I wanted to say goodbye to my collection of CF cards because my computer won't take them without an external reader and I want to get into SD cards so I can quickly transfer pictures to my PDA without the need for an intermediary device. (I'm actually using mini-SD cards in the camera.) I'd love it if this camera had bluetooth but at the time of writing this is simply not a common option among digital cameras.

I also wanted to say goodbye to my collection of AA batteries and charger. I was very attracted by the P4's tiny mobile-phone-style battery and convenient charger. I was surprised to hear when making the purchase that there are chargers available now which can charge two AA batteries in just a couple of hours but they're certainly bulky affairs - when you put them next to the tiny matchbox-sized recharger for the P4's neat little Lithium battery the thought of carrying one of those bricks around on an extended trip looks like an unappealing option.

Other attractive features are:

* 8 MegaPixels - this wasn't an overriding attraction for me; I find 3 MP is enough for my needs but I'm sure one day I'll appreciate the larger resolution when I'm taking more than just a bunch of snaps.
* Vibration reduction (VR) - So far I'm impressed with this. I'm an 'available light' kind of photographer and I've taken great shots indoors with the shutter speed at 1/8 sec using this feature.
* Large lens - the lens is a serious affair. The first few shots I've taken suggest it's even better than the already-impressive optics on the Coolpix 3100.
* Video with sound - the lack of sound was something which bugged me a little bit about my last camera but I seriously doubt I'll be making much use of this feature. Note however that the video offers multiple modes and I can say I'm very very impressed with the clarity of the results in low-light situations.
* Slimmer build - I do confess to being slightly ambivalent on this one. It's much easier to fit in the pocket than my old camera however I always worry I'm going to drop the thing... Something you have to get used to perhaps...
* Large screen - Very impressive. Lovely and clear with lots of information.
* Internal memory - it has 23MB of internal memory. This should allow you to store about 30 pictures without the need for a memory card. Most wouldn't care but I reckon this could really come in handy during some unforeseen occurrence (like the memory card being full/damaged/required elsewhere).
* Voice memo - it's possible to append a voice memo to a particular photo. Not something for everyone but I could imagine it coming in handy.
* Lastly the camera has highly configurable exposure modes and sophisticated metering and autofocus options - most of which I haven't tested yet.

Finally I should note the minor gripes I had with my old Coolpix 3100 and note how the P4 addresses these:

* On/off switch - my old camera had a clumsily-positioned switch that always got caught as I was putting it into the case. The P4 has a press-down affair which is much better.
* Flimsy cover on battery compartment - the plastic catches broke off more than once on the old camera and were a constant source of worry. The P4 has a much better design. Actually the P4 incorporates a lot of metal casing and parts, and in general it seems to be more sturdy.
* Lag - on my old camera there was a lag on metering, flash charging and focusing. It took a long time between switching on camera and it becoming ready to shoot. This is fixed to a large extent in the P4. The amount of time from switching on to shooting is as low as three seconds.
* The dial at the top - the 3100 would always come out of my pocket in a different mode to the one it was on when it went in. I'd say this has only been partially addressed on the P4. A shame.

Small gripe: I'd say the controls are less intuitive on the P4 than on my old 3100. However one must remember that there are many more options and functions at your fingertips with this camera. Another one: the tripod mount is positioned all the way off at one side. It's surely not an issue with the camera being so light but ... wouldn't it be better under the centre of the lens? I suppose one possible advantage with it as it is would be that you could change battery and/or memory card without unscrewing from the tripod.

Of course up to here I've taken for granted the superb image quality you should expect with a Nikon. So let me be clear ... with the P4 you're getting superb image quality. Right I've said it. It has surpassed my expectations ... which were already high.

And it's great value. It cost me US$280. I'm expecting to get some great results with this camera.
