5.0 out of 5 stars Klemperer's Unique View of Mozart, 16 Mar 2009
By Graham Peacock (Worcestershire) - See all my reviews
The great English music critic Ernest Newman once remarked that when listening to Mozart's music he could not help from thinking that all of this was the work of an extremely gifted child. Perhaps this reaction was due to the kind of performances that he had heard and which are still all too common today: pretty, chocolate-box Mozart, rather lightweight and without any real strength or masculinity and far too sweet for many tastes. It was Bruno Walter and Otto Klemperer who demonstrated that there is more to Mozart than elegance and charm. Klemperer particularly, brought an almost Beethoven like strength and virility to his performances, and to many ears, including my own, this was extremely welcome.
This set reissues some of the eleven symphonies that Klemperer recorded in stereo between 1956 and 1963. When these recordings were first issued in the United States in 1965 the critic Irving Kolodin wrote, "As a perspective of Otto Klemperer's musical vista from the summit of his eightieth year...there is a sufficiency of meaningful music in the integral issue of the last six Mozart symphonies alone to keep the mind occupied and the spirits soaring for days...the sense of structural stresses and balances, of architectural proportion and logic, as these qualities can be musically conveyed, is rigorously applied by Klemperer to the greater glory of Mozart as he understands him. When, as in the Jupiter, he comprehends him equally in all his aspects, the result is close to the Olympian implications of the title".
As always with Klemperer there is the opportunity, and the time, to hear much of the detail that is so often lost, or goes for nothing, in other performances. In this respect, the performance of Symphony No.29 is a particular treasure and delight.
The weight and scale of these performances will perhaps come as a shock to some of today's listeners. It may also come as a revelation, as Klemperer's Beethoven did to us in the 1950's and 60's.
It is to be hoped that EMI will also reissue symphonies 25,31,33,34 and 36 in due course. These performances also provide a unique view of Mozart that reveal beyond all doubt that this is far from being the work of an extremely gifted child.
