Synopsis

Easily a favourite of action movie fans, and for many Die Hard is still the archetypal modern action film. Guns, explosions, stunts, fights- yes, as well as plenty of one-liners all wrapped around the now familiar 'one man against the bad guys' plot, and set inside a sky-scraper.

The film follows John McClain, a NY cop home for Christmas, who gets caught up in an attack on the building where his wife works. He is the only hope of the hostages, and the only person who can stop Rickman and his men from looting the safe. McClain must rely on his wits, playing cat and mouse with the bad guys, and dealing with incompetent good guys.

Considerably more clever than most action films, thanks mainly to the script, we find ourselves cheering for McClane rather than simply sitting back and waiting for him to sweep up the bad guys. Rickman is perfect, shifting between being charming to psychotic, innocent, whatever he wants to be, and Willis deals with the action and one-liners admirably. It is Willis's comedy background which gives his performance an edge over his 80s counterparts. Veljohnson and Willis's relationship is just one of the many reasons for the film's unexpected success. McTiernen is an expert in this genre, and directs action better than anyone else in the period. Although the sequels are good, they could not match the action, claustrophobia, tension and charm of the original.

This 2 disc has all the features you could want, all are enjoyable, and all are presented in a simple effective way.
