5.0 out of 5 stars How Wireless Helped Shorten WW2, 13 Oct 2006
Radio Amateurs will find this production particularly fascinating.
There are two 60 minute films on this DVD, each showing how the clever use of secret wireless transmission and interception made the war campaign against the Nazis much stronger than we have come to realise. Both films are told first hand by the men who were actually there, operating the equipment, who have been sworn to secrecy until now.

BEYOND BLETCHLEY PARK - explores how the WW2 secret German wireless signals were intercepted, deciphered at Bletchley Park, acted upon by our own intelligence and subsequently dispersed back into the field in occupied Europe. RSS listener and Voluntary Interceptor Bob King, wireless operators Wilf Neal and Maurice Richardson describe their secret wartime experiences. David White talks about and demonstrates spy-sets and Geoffrey Pidgeon, spy-set builder, takes a journey back to the site of his wartime exploits in an authentic Packard automobile, used as a mobile transmitter/receiver unit.

BLACK PROPAGANDA - follows the development and content of the WW2 secret British 'black' radio broadcasts against the Germans. SCU 1 transmitter engineer Phil Luck revisits his wartime post at Potsgrove and describes his duties with rare photographs not seen before. Ingram Murray, son of one of the important Foreign Office officials that shaped the operations, explains the politics behind the scenes. A poignant visit to the specially built secret recording studios at Milton Bryant on the Bedford estates bears testament to Sefton Delmer's vitally important broadcasts. New secret papers are unearthed from the propaganda station manager's trunk.....

Bletchley Park has had all the acclaim, but in fact it was only one part of a much bigger campaign called ULTRA headed by Winston Churchill described in more detail in this film. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating glimpse behind the scenes, 9 Aug 2008

Not much detail could be added to the comprehensive first review except to say that this is compulsive viewing for anyone interested in radio, espionage and WWII - especially for radio amateurs. Conducted in a sober, factual, non-sensational way, this documentary reminds you of what the BBC used to able to do before "dumbing down".
