Product Description

Album Description

February 2006 sees the continuation of the Vocalion label’s association with Michael Garrick. As part of our ongoing CDSML series, dedicated to re-issuing the finest British jazz and progressive music albums of the 1960s and ’70s, Vocalion are delighted to add two exquisite Michael Garrick albums – recorded for Decca’s Argo subsidiary – to our catalogue in February 2006. They mark Garrick’s fourth and fifth appearances in the CDSML series and offer the listener fascinating insights into different aspects of his work: small group jazz, and jazz melded with another of the pianist-composer’s passions – poetry. Both stand as further examples of Garrick’s determination to tread his own idiosyncratic path in jazz, and of his unique, sometimes esoteric, but always thought-provoking voice as pianist and composer.

This beautiful album – recorded in 1972 and only Garrick’s second Trio outing on LP since 'Moonscape' (Airborne, 1964) – often finds him in a reflective, pensive mood. The Trio setting conveys perfectly the sense of intimacy and introspection that pervades much of the seven Garrick originals constituting the album. Nowhere are these qualities better displayed than in the thirteen-minute opus that is 'Cold Mountain', the controlled joy of 'First Born' and the haunting strains of 'Miranda Sleeping'. 'Cold Mountain' is a fine example of Garrick’s ability to sustain interest throughout a long, modal piece. The music evolves organically from ideas that are initially stated in ¾ at an almost funereal tempo, and then inexorably develop to a frantic climax.

In contrast is the eloquent, up-tempo swing of 'Proclamation', where Garrick works in an ingenious and fleeting reference to Cole Porter’s 'Love for Sale' during the first minute. Annunciation sees Garrick tentatively flirt with the rhythms of rock, and in the process produces his own typically thoughtful, personal take on the jazz-rock synthesis.

On Cold Mountain Garrick receives superb support from bassist Dave Green and drummer Trevor Tomkins. Their consummate musicianship and sensitivity to Garrick’s jazz concept help to make the album what it is. Tomkins, incidentally, is the cousin of British jazz piano legend Roy Budd.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pure Garrick, 21 Mar 2007

As part of the excellent Vocalian British modern jazz series, Cold Mountain has appropriately been reissued alongside the brilliant Home Stretch Blues - both albums were recorded back to back in April 1972. Cold Mountain will be welcome to many because it is that surprisingly rare thing - a Garrick Trio album: Garrick-piano, Dave Green-bass, Trevor Tompkins-drums. As with most piano trios following in the Bill Evans tradition, the music could be accused of being too polite or even twee in places, but that would be to misunderstand that this is a kind of "chamber music" genre and that the appeal of Garrick's music lies in the tension between modest restraint & emotional openness. The compositions are all originals from across Garrick's career - late 50s to early 70s - it's a chance to hear some of his tunes, familiar from various band versions, with the clarity of a mature "pure" trio setting. Only on the title track does Garrick stretch out into a 13 minute extended eastern mode improvisation. Listening to this album today it's a mystery why someone like Keith Jarrett was so popular in the 70s compared to Garrick - I'd now say that Garrick made the superior music!
