4.0 out of 5 stars Lyrical contemporary chamber music, 17 Aug 2006

Arthur Butterworth should not be confused with George Butterworth, the composer of "The Banks of Green Willow" and who was killed in 1916. Arthur Butterworth was born in 1923 and since the 1950s has written five symphonies, various concertos and much else (his first symphony has been recorded on volume 4 of Classico's "British Symphonic Collection").

Here we have three of Butterworth's chamber works, two pianos trios dating from 1983 and 2004 respectively and the Viola Sonata from the early 1980s. Despite their relatively recent provenance, these works are highly approachable and fall easily on the ear. They are complex works, but not prickly and show a mastery of small-scale musical writing. The influences mentioned in the useful note (written by Paul Conway and the composer himself) are Sibelius and Bax, and the music does have a slightly chilly, mysterious quality that echoes those composers. The Adagio from the second Piano Trio in particular reminds me of Bax's chamber music. The Viola Sonata, a very fine piece, has "a faint whiff of [Bax's] celtic twilight" (to quote the composer) and also at times a bittersweet melancholy that is reminiscent of Herbert Howells.

These works are well worth exploring. They demonstrate complete fluency of technique and should appeal to anyone interested in British music of the last century. The notes refer to two orchestral works influenced by the Yorkshire Moors, "A Dales Suite" and "The Path Across the Moors". On the evidence on the highly atmospheric music on this disc, those works should be very interesting.
