How concert DVDs should be, 25 Feb 2006
By A Customer
Concert DVDs have a long track record of leaving something to be desired. This latest offering from the Eels should be regarded as an example of how to get it absolutely right. Many concert recordings try too hard to capture the atmosphere amongst the audience, and more often than not, the music suffers. This recording is all about the music, which in my opinion is exactly the way it should be. It helps of course, that the music in question has been written by one of the 'alternative' genre's finest exponents - Mark Everett (E), and is complemented by the superbly talented Chet (is there any instrument he can't play?) and Big Al, as well as a very good (in every department ;)) string quartet. Most of the old classics are not present - people wanting to hear songs like 3 Speed, Climbing To The Moon, Susan's House and Last Stop This Town might be disappointed. But the setlist is still very strong, with a number of songs performed in such a way that makes you realise how good they really are. The production of the live performance is superb, the lighting and sound are more than adequate. Far from distracting the viewer, the small snippets of extra footage which occasionally crop up, actually complement the show. The extras (four short films and two music videos) are also quite entertaining, in a world where that is seldom the case. All in all a cracking DVD.
