...to go into a detailed description of the items on this disc. Suffice to say that works for saxophone, marimba, french horn, flute, viola etc are here in solo and duet. Ignore all the talk about Babbitt's music being complex and difficult and look at the price - for which you will get some of the most inventive, lyrical, intelligent, delicate and delightful - yes, delightful - music I know. It isn't ambient, you will not be lulled and you won't play it every day but, when your ears are the mood for some attentive listening, you will not find anything more satisfying, more exciting than the music of Milton Babbitt.

Previously issued at full price on the Koch label this Naxos disc is a plausible introducion to one of America's greatest living composers.Babbitt's thorny reputation is based on barely fathomable technical writings BY and ON the composer.
The music itself is surprisingly engaging (most of the items on this CD) and sometimes rather earth shattering in it's impact (try the Solo Requiem,Piano Concerto or Allegro Penseroso on other releases)
For anyone who has encountered problems with the likes of Boulez,Carter and Ferneyough et al Babbitt presents a rather beguiling alternative.Strongly recommended though worth supplementing with some of the other works.
