Gilbert Rowland has now completed the whole set of Soler harpsichord sonatas for Naxos (thanks as always to this wonderfully adventurous company who have revolutionised recorded classical music in terms of repetory and price)running, I think, to 13 volumes. And what incredibly inventive stuff it is! Relying heavily on Spanish-inflected dance rhythms, the complete set is almost all memorable and extremely catchy in its sheer joy and exuberance. Rowland clearly loves this music and it's frankly a wonder that it's not put on at least a par with the works of Scarlatti. In many ways the music is more haunting and certainly more original and varied in its often zany musical argument. Rowland plays with obvious affection and just the right amount of sparkle. Highly recommended - light yes, but also deeply satisfying.
