Amazon.co.uk Review

It’s criminal, really, given the sheer outright quality of Family Guy that more people aren’t willing to give it a try. For while it tends to draw comparisons to The Simpsons--after all, it is a family-based animated comedy show--Family Guy very much has a voice of its own. It’s also less worried about catering to a family demographic, something the writers have little problem making the most of.

Season four has plenty of evidence for why the show shouldn’t be overlooked. Picking up the story of the family Griffin, this time more of the background characters are allowed into the limelight, and that’s really to the programme’s benefit. That’s not to say the main players are out of sight, and the quite wonderful baby Stewie has plenty of air time, but there’s a real ensemble feel.

The rapid-fire, razor-sharp wit and writing quality that’s become the trademark of the show is present and correct too, and the quality of the episodes on offer put season four up there as not quite the finest series of Family Guy to date, but it nonetheless runs things very close indeed. If you’ve not taken the plunge yet, you’ve really, really been missing out… --Jon Foster

5.0 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC!, 24 Jun 2006
Family Guy just goes from strength to strength. Seth Macfarlane and his team of writers are excellent, producing episodes that almost dwarf the ones before in terms of hilarity. There are more 'cut-aways' in this season, and although these are key to the shows success, the creators may have gone slightly overboard with them this time around. It is of course still hilarious, essential viewing, ('Gary, The No-Trash Cougar' had me in fits!) If you are not into this show already.... then I highly recommend it. Roll on the fifth season!

4.0 out of 5 stars More of the same, 22 Dec 2006

As a fan of the first 3 series I was not disappointed with the fourth instalment.

My only concern was the lack of episodes. As other reviewer have pointed out there were more shown in the states than were put in this box-set however it doesn't take away from what is another great family guy season.

Sometimes you do get the feeling they are trying a little to hard to be overly funny or outrageous but 99% of the time the humour is right on the money.

The are some interesting plot developments this time round which helps expand the characters we all know and love as well as adding the opportunity for the makers to take the show off in various direction.

All in all, for this money I think its well worth a look!

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, 2 May 2006
By ifisurvive (England) - See all my reviews
Contrary to pretty much every other review here I think this is the worst series so far. I am a huge fan of Family Guy and own all the DVDs but this just seemed the weakest so far. All previous series have been great funny stories combined with occational hilarious surreal flashbacks. This series seems to be weaker on storylines, more relient on playing to old jokes and obsessed with cramming in as many flashbacks as possible (which I never thought was possible, but actually gets a bit anoying after a while).
Don't get me wrong - there are still flashes of genius (the A-ha video springs to mind!), many laugh-out-load moments and this series takes things a lot closer to crossing the line of taste whilst still keeping it very funny. But best series? No.
