It is fair to say that the world of indie music has been flooded of late with a kind of samey sewage of guitar driven ramblings, some of it good, some of it bad, some it so awful it drives you back to the 90's. Morning Runner have bothered to ignore the influences of now and go somewhere different, exactly where only they will know. But from the point of view of one who fully appreciates their music it is a very exciting place. What they give us is music that has a deeply reflective and emotional feel to it without sounding like Keane, but also music that has an energy and does not at any point stagnate itself into a rut. From the heart plucking rhythm of Hold your Breath and Ocean to the pacey energy of Burning Bridges and Have a Good time the boys never fail to impress. A few albums have excited me in the last year, this is one of them. It has moments of sombre reflection that draw you into the feeling that they put into their music, your own emotions seem to connect with the message and feeling of each song, Matt's voice is perfectly suited to the mood, rasping at times and shaking full of emotion, this is the sound of a band who are connected deeply to the music they make, and this is evident in the sound from song one to eleven. My favourite song from the album is Hold Your Breath, it captures the emotion of the lyrics perfectly, the drums skip and brush along holding it together gently as the song demands and Ali shows his gentle skills most evidently on this, the piano draws you in almost visually, you feel the sadness and frustration you can almost see Fields drawn into the emotion of the song as he keeps pace with Ali, the song is completed as Tom’s gentle melodic strumming of the bass keeps the depth of the song nicely in place and Matt’s voice full of the angst and emotion tells the story which almost draws a tear. If you don't buy this album you are in my opinion missing out on a special moment in musical history, the music is so far from samey that I can't imagine this being an album that will gather dust on my CD shelf unlike the hundreds of others that currently do.
