Synopsis

Beloved television cult director Joss Whedon ('Buffy The Vampire Slayer', 'Angel') makes a spectacular first foray onto the big screen with 'Serenity', the cinematic adaptation of his wildly popular but short-lived sci-fi series, 'Firefly'. A mix of space western, comedy, and drama, 'Serenity' follows captain Malcolm Mal Reynolds (Nathan Fillion) and his ragtag crew as they trade their way around the edges of civilised society. Of particular interest are two passengers they take on, Simon and River Tam (Sean Maher, Summer Glau), a brother and his telepathic sister on the run from the corrupt governing Alliance. As notorious former members of the anti-Alliance opposition, Mal and his crew make it difficult for Simon and River to stay hidden. Everything goes completely awry when a government assassin is sent to retrieve River. As Mal is forced to choose between his close-knit crew and the brother and sister newcomers, it becomes apparent that River harbours both a dangerous secret and astounding fighting powers, and Mal decides that discovering the truth about what she knows might just be worth his time. Many of the film's action sequences revolve around Summer Glau's martial arts skills in her portrayal of River. Glau prepared for her role with Hong Kong stuntwoman Ming Lu, as well as stunt coordinators Chad Stahelski and Hiro Koda, and as a resulted performed nearly all the stunt work herself. In addition to the stellar stunts, realistic graphics, and an often haunting score, the film's actors display a rare chemistry that brings viewers both into their lives and into a possible version of humanity's future.

Serenity began a number of years ago as a TV series known as "Firefly". American TV station FOX in making one their most recognized stupidest decisions ever, canceled the series early. However, Firefly with its army of fans the world-over and the strong willed maker/creator Joss Whedon (of Buffy and Angel fame) fought the good fight and eventually won, with the eventual making of the Film Serenity. Through both, the TV series and the film, the term "Browncoat" alone came into being and our dictionaries but thats also another story.

The film itself quickly introduces the various characters (for those new to the whole world of Firefly) and this it does very well in the time constraints allocated to the total film length time. You cannot but love the characters. Each on their own or all together, they have a resounding effect on your heart as you cannot but like them as the go from escapade to escapade.

The theme of the film itself, helps to resolve some of the mystery of one of the characters and what that person went through in order to united with another relation, as well as the other ship crew. I am being careful to not give too much away for those new to this film or TV series. If you see this film first before the TV series (which is now repeated often on TV), you will want to know more and see more. As such just because of this film alone, many new fans have been introduced into the TV series that is now available on DVD and has sold millions of copies all around the world.

Off screen, I personally have met most of the characters from the TV series and film. I can honestly say that they are a great bunch of people brought together by Joss Whedon. He has done a remarkable job yet again.
The only 'shame' that can be mentioned in regard to this film, lies at the feet of FOX television for seriously being stupid enough to cancel the prior TV series before they actually knew the gem they had in their stock of TV programmes.
This film Serenity, is a clear indication of just how much Serenity/Firefly could have soared into the TV history books, maybe eventually becoming as famous and as long lasting as Star Trek, the original series.

View this film and enjoy the pure pleasure to being introduced into a world that you never knew existed or could be dreamed of.
The film like the TV series is an absolute pleasure to watch again and again.
Watch it once, you will be hooked... Soon you will be a 'Browncoat' and welcome to the club.
