Synopsis

In the same vein as EDWARD SCISSORHANDS and NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS, Tim Burton continues to combine wholesome comedy and creepy horror with this tale of a mild-mannered Victorian gentleman, Victor (Johnny Depp), who accidentally marries a mysterious corpse bride (Helena Bonham-Carter) instead of his intended, Victoria (Emily Watson). Victor soon discovers that the Land of the Dead holds more fun than frights and begins to fall in love with his innocent bride. Meanwhile, Victoria has been drawn into a scam of a marriage and may not escape with her life. As time runs out for everyone, can there be a resolution where everyone gets what he or she deserves? Building on their past productive relationship (EDWARD SCISSORHANDS, ED WOOD), Tim Burton and Johnny Depp create a colourful riot of a film that revives the increasingly rare method of stop-motion animation. Over the period of 10 years that Burton worked to complete the film, new techniques were created to speed the process, including a new way to change the character models' facial expressions by using gears in their heads. Of particular note is the lilting score by Danny Elfman, another longtime Burton collaborator. Fun for adults and children, CORPSE BRIDE is another welcome walk through Tim Burton's twisted mind.

5.0 out of 5 stars A different beauty, 26 Jun 2006
By A musician (Denmark) - See all my reviews
If you liked "A Nightmare Before Christmas" you'll absolutely enjoy this one as well. I must admit that I really admire most of Tim Burton's films, as they really seem to go beneath the surface in a most profound and original way and really do have a lot of heart and depth. A film, which is about a guy who accidentally marries a `dead' woman and therefore is taken to the underworld of the dead and hold there against his wish bound by his vow, would normally seem to be a rather dark and sinister film, but not in this case, this is a beautiful film. It is almost `classical' in its style of telling its tale, but at the same time of cause, being a Tim Burton film, `unusual'. This is about magic & love versus vanity & evil, but the film also has a lot of humour and irony, which is unfolded in a glorious way. It is also a film about redemption, and dare I say, it has a wonderful ending where everything falls into place. The music is also a big part of this movie and Danny Elfman, who is a great film composer, has really delivered some stunning tunes. This is a real gem by the maestro - don't miss this one.

3.0 out of 5 stars One of the prettiest movies ever, should be savoured on a bigger screen., 7 Sep 2008
By Ms. N. Devadoss (London, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Firstly I love this movie and the film alone would get 5 stars. However, even taking into account the limitations of watching ANYTHING on a small screen, this lost out more than most. In crowded scenes like in the bar I found it hard to keep focus where it's meant to be as it's all crammed in a tiny area. The beautiful character detail is lost making it look like a childish cartoon rather than the art it is. The sound quality of the player also doesn't do it justice, some of the instrumentals just don't come out that well.

If you love the movie and want to be able to watch it on the go, this will be useful. If you've never seen it before, do yourself a favour and get the DVD.
