the collection is carefully made and i really enjoyed watching it. as we get the jeannie series quite mixed nowadays in tv it is good to see the series in chronological order. at the beginning jeannie's character was not completely defined and the series looked more like a copy of bewitched. gradually the series evolved and hayen rorke as dr. bellows (an improved version of gladys kravits in bewitched) makes the series unforgetable. another fascinating fact is to see jeannie (barbara eden) find fun in her role and to become the ever charming genie everybody has to fall in love with. if you do not have a genie in a bottle you might need that collection!

Season one of this classic American comedy series of the 1960s was finally released in March 2006 to North American consumers on Region 1 DVD. It's showing for a region four (Australia) release on 19 July 2006, so one hopes that it will not be too long before it arrives properly on these shores as a R2 disc, likes it's so-called 'sister' show "Bewitched".

This DVD set has much in common with the early seasons of that show, as the first series of "Jeannie" was also made in black and white, yet has been made available in two versions - the puritans version in black and white, and a colourized version. The fact that colour outsold black and white by about two-to-one meant that when "Bewitched S.1" finally made in to UK shores, the only choice available was the colour edition. R2 fans of "Jeannie" can probably expect more of the same - if you want the original black and white episodes, you'll have to import from America. Not that I find there is anything wrong with the new colouirized editions, a very small but vocal minority do seem to disagree.

The show itself was never really that well made. The scripts were often quite repetative week after week, and the only reason the show was probably as successful as it was was down to two assets - between Barbara Eden's neck and her infamous covered-up navel!! That said, I, like about three generations of male viewers have grown up with this show during it's countless re-runs during the 1970's, or in my case, the 1980's, and as a horny teenager now well into his thirties, I can tell you that my teenage crush on Barbara Eden has never diminished.

This was a brilliant show, and leaving aside the arguments about when it "jumped the shark" (marrying of Jeannie and Major Nelson in the last season was a really bad idea), these are the earlier episodes and are especially welcome to any nostalgia fans like myself.

The only real question comes from a technical point of view? Do you opt for the R1 NTSC release or go for the R4 PAL one? Colour or Black and White? And if you don't have a multi-region enabled player at all, then this DVD release is a good a reason as any to go out and get one!

I'm not reviewing the show itself, but rather the colorization. (If you've seen the show, you know whether you like it; if you haven't seen it, you can read the many other reviews.) The show is lighthearted fun and not to be taken seriously, but if I'm bothered by the colorization, it must be really bad. Unless you like Jeannie with orange hair and people who look like they've drunk a bottle of ink, skip this version and get the BW set. Then you won't be constantly distracted by weird and wrong colors.
