A great value box set from a "Class" act., 4 May 2006
I have longed for a release like this for ages bringing together the rare versions of album tracks, b sides and the "Single" versions/ edits of the hits.
The sheer brilliance and pounding guitar of "Precious" gets the ball rolling. This is billed as a "Demo", yet you would never know it. It is a song that sounds instantly familiar to Pretenders fans hearing it for the 1st time yet is packed with originality.
All of the previously unreleased songs and b sides are fantastic and were you to just have these alone, you would have a momentous album.
Stand outs for me were:-
The delicious low key guitar work on "When I change my life", which changes the mood of the song to a more reflective one and highlights Chrissie's soaring voice and beautiful lyrics.
The wonderful "What you gonna do about it". A song that fits nicely in with the style of the "Learning to crawl" era.
The class mix of "Human" is sharper than the album mix and definitely worth it. This brings new life to the song and makes it even more enjoyable.
Not a second time is wonderfully melodic in a 60's style and quite different to anything the Pretenders have ever done on any other project. I've got to say I love it when the piano accompanies Chrissie's singing and some of the strongest tracks have this.
Goin back is missing from the collection and that was one thing that was missing from that song. I think if it had also had the piano on it, it would have recaptured Dusty's classic version and perhaps would have been a bigger hit. Still if you can get this, the mellow mood of it is well worth experiencing.
Angel of the morning sounds distinctly different to the more polished version heard on the "Friends" soundtrack. It is meatier and kicks ass.
Lovers of today from the Isle of View is just so good you cannot imagine till you hear it. Definitely a class performance and one of the best Pretenders songs ever.
Kid - James Honeyman Scott, Pete Farndon, Martin Chambers & Chrissie have produced one of the best guitar rocks songs ever. The music is upbeat yet the lyrics beautifully melancholic.
There is much on here to enjoy - especially the tracks from Packed, which was not as popular an album as the others yet to me is a treasure trove and I am sure you will enjoy it to if you can get it!
One strange thing is that "Saving grace" from Loose Screw, which received quite a bit of airplay is not included. Still if you own the album and it is easy to get hold of, you would probably rather have a rarity instead.
The live performances are all class & a welcome addition to the Greatest Hits collection DVD.
So Chrissie & co. , please can we have some more music (surely it's about time for another album) & how about giving us the rarities "If there was a man" and "Goin back" as b sides on your next single - just so we have them all.

Missing Track , 18 April 2006
An excellent collection of 81 tracks on 4 cd's and 19 videos
on 1 dvd.Although there are 15 previously unissued tracks and some tracks which are on cd for the first time there is no inclusion of the B side of 'Day After Day' from Pretenders 2,
this was an instrumental called 'In The Sticks'.This track I am sure could easily have been transcribed from the original 7" single and should have been included in this collection. It is
a shame when companies release sets like these they do not try harder for the completionists like me.

Pretenders - a box of contradictions and romance !, 12 April 2006
I've loved the Pretenders since i first saw them at Poole Arts Centre when i was 13. Chrissie Hynde has said that she never was a sex symbol ... well she has been for this guy from that moment through line up changes, so standing at the back of Koko in Camden last Friday (7 Apr 06).
Contradictions, well the box set displays the pure energy and guitar powered The Wait , Tatooed Love Boys, Bad Boys Get Spanked, Talk of he Town. Energy well, Jimmy Scott and Pete Farndon provided that, with Farndon's Lemmy / Marlon Brando leaning perhaps giving it the heavy edge that made The Pretenders in my book an awesome live band.
We get the pure pop of Brass in Pocket, Stop Your Sobbing, Don't Get me Wrong, I'll stand by you , Complex Person. For me it nails Chrissie as a romantic sweetheart ... sorry to dispel those illusions.
Low's well, Don't Get me Wrong aside, The dog for me was Get Close when it seemed the Pretenders momentarily lost their identity and didn't know whether their were competitors, a chic fuelled funk band, or a second rate brill building congwriting and session musician collective. So we get the so - so Traditon of Love and My Baby but at least not some of the real weaker moments of Get Close with its patchwork quilt of collaborators. Packed is generally considered Chrissie's weakest moment, but not by me. Maybe some of the Production value were locked in the 80's butat last this box shows How do i miss You, Never do that and When will i see you as they are which is songs that really do sit alongside the Learning to Crawl album very well.
As for the Last of the Independants, Viva Al Amour and Loose Screw songs they show Chrissie Hynde as one of the greteast songwriters, and as a kick butt performer. Songs such as the Night in my Veins, Hollywood Perfume and 977 rank with her best, if not the best. The unissued California and Needle and the damage done speak volumes about her roadmap, as does Biker, Nails in the Road, and Love me from the Heart Down. Legalize me's Jeff Beck guitar solo is worth the price of admission alone. All the songs from Loose Screw should be left off though - this record is so good you should already own a copy of it.
Highlights - The Wait and Tatooed Love Boys from Alright Now if only for Jimmy Scotts guitar playing and Pete Farndon's leather fetish and downright scary stage persona. Other highlight's Morrisey's Everyday is Like Sunday on the cd's (but where is Chrissie's spectacular version of Going Back ?), Private Life from the Isle of View sessions .
Ultimate highs - Method of Love- ultimate marriage between pop and a group that still kicks it, and Back on the Chain Gang - my own personal slice of pop heaven.
Lows - really only highs . Pretenders Mk 1 were so great why no live evidence of them like the Santa Monica Civic Auditoreum gigs . Latest line up. Adam Seymour has done so much for the Pretenders in recent years and he really is Chrissie's greatest foil since Jimmy- why not nore involvment, acknowledgement, photos etc. Money performed from the US Festival in about 83 was just so great ... it could have been subsituted for Not a second time which could have been brilliant if the backing had been recut.
Obviously i'm a fan.. i just adore the Pretenders, but this band is serisuly underated and had Last of The Independants, Viva Al Amour and Loose Screw been made by Garbage or PJ Harvey or dare i say The Rolling Stones we would have been hailing the brilliance of them.
God bless Chrissie, Jimmy , Pete , Martin , Robbie , Malcolm , Andy and Adam the heart and soul of the Pretenders.
The box is lavish with a great booklet and overviews of songs, pircure sleeves to records, a poster , 4 cd's and a full length DVD ...... go buy and discover.
