What do you get if you throw a contemporary laptop luminary into a studio with a veteran jazz/funk/soul drummer? Maybe not much in some cases, but with Keiran Hebden (aka Fourtet) and Steve Reid (former rhythm master for Martha & The Vandellas, James Brown, Miles Davis et al), you end up with a banquet of experimental music that attempts to fill a huge spiritual gap in the electronic music market. The Exchange was recorded live in one day, following a series of live performances by the duo. On occasion, the sporadic nature of the recording shows. Many passages sound like the two musicians simply have no connection whatsoever and are just filling in time, waiting for psychic inspiration to kick in. But at other times the meeting of minds is awesome, creating a thrilling, formidable energy that underlines the masterful handling of their respective musical domains. Tracks like "Morning Prayer" are especially stunning; other pieces are joyously questing in nature, while others merely strain the ears.--Paul Sullivan
