3.0 out of 5 stars Good performance of Handel's first London opera, 14 Mar 2006
By ROBERT L SMITH (York United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
No stars in this studio-based recording of the first opera Handel wrote for London. But consistently good singing and some stylish direction from Kevin Mallon make this set an excellent bargain - especially attractive if you are unfamiliar with this fabulous work. Handel set out to amaze and astonish his London audience and it's not difficult in this performance to realise how spot-on his instincts were. It led to a lifetime in London and, in the end, to undeniably greater masterpieces; but this opera - with appropriate sound-effects in this recording - is irresistible.
I still await a real no-holds-barred performance which might recreate the thrill which the first audiences might have experienced; and if you're looking for star singers, the Christopher Hogwood / Cecilia Bartoli / David Daniels recording on Decca is unbeatable - but it's more than three times the price... I look forward to more Handel from Kevin Mallon and colleagues.

4.0 out of 5 stars Orchestrally fine performance, 30 Jan 2008
Very good orchestral performance, vocally less satisfying but all the same it includes many satisfactory interpretations. This issue is a good place to start to get to know this fantastic opera and then invest in the Hogwood or Jacobs version
