CD Description

Second solo album from former Skunk Anansie lead-singer Skin. This is the follow-up to 2003's 'Fleshwounds' and sees her develop the punk-rock sound of her debut, whilst maintaining her trademark intense vocals. 5.0 out of 5 stars Skin Rage, 3 Mar 2006
By A Customer
This is a truely fantastic album. Unlike Fleshwounds, Skin has returned to a more rocking style (without it being of the same genre as Skunk Anansie). The album has spawned two singles so far: Alone In My Room and Just Let The Sun. The former is a brief punk-rock growl, the latter, a heavy, thudding track which sees Skin sounding dark yet strangely euphoric. The album does have its softer moments. The beautiful 'Purple' is bitter twinged with melancholy, yet driven on with a marching beat; the chorus lyrics: 'She won't go where I, I would go for you, I cursed my heart for you' leaving a particularly strong impression. Similarly, the final track on the album, 'Falling For You', leaves the listener soothed and reflective after, as with all of Skin's work, something of an emotional and musical roller coaster.

Other stand out tracks on the album:

Nothing But - Begins soft, in 'Fleshwounds' style, before building to a climax. The lyrics are particularly impressive: 'I feel nothing but oceans of love and forgiveness for you and your sweet girl, please ignore the particular way I smile, take no notice of the blood on the lip I bite'...

Moving On - One of the most original sounding tracks on this album. The rolling beat combined with glittering guitar sounds, not to mention Skin's voice sounding almost angelic, then as the music builds, gradually cracking to reveal the snarl she was so renowned for in her Skunk Anansie days.

She's On - Just very heavy, very catchy, very fun.

5.0 out of 5 stars Randomandy, 2 Mar 2006
This is a superb album, its quite short at 30 something minutes, but this means it has impact and leaves you wanting more... so just just put it on repeat. Not a 'weak' (bad pun) track on it. I just suggest buying the singles as well too get more of her in her ever changing form. But going by the indie feel this has, she sounds comfortable and confident and in top form!!
Loving this!!!

3.0 out of 5 stars Nothing fake, just a slightly distant echo, 22 April 2006
By P. Brown - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
To say it up front, it's not a bad album. No really, it's quite okay. And I'm not trying to damn with faint praise here. If possible I would have given it three and a half stars.

Stand out tracks are:
'Purple' (surely a breakthrough & crossover single in waiting!! get it on XFM & Virgin and watch it go baby go) which has a bright energetic hook, perfectly alloyed with Skin's magical soaring voice - beauty!
'Nothing But' which reveals the compellingly vulnerable side of Skin's frankly fantastic voice and her emotion-fuelled delivery - this track could stop an 18-wheeler in its tracks - awesum!
'Falling For You' another touchingly accessible ballad.

All in all the album seems to have a raw personal honesty, which both beguiles and enchants, and leaves you breathless as the various impacts hit you firmly in the solar plexus.

The opening tracks are both rockers, but with Skin's voice far too shouty, and so (for me) missing the point, and all in all a bit 'Sham-69' - fine if you go that way.

The problem I have is that (and I know comparisons are odious but the majority of its buyers will be fans from her Skunk Anansie days) the better tracks from 'Fake Chemical State' are not as good as many of the weakest SA tracks - and overall the SA-days depth, clarity and complexity seems absent, esp in production terms, and this album sounds very flat and 2D by comparison, with a 'Mush of Noise' achieved from time to time.

To sum up - I do like this album, it is a bit short sure, but it's not bad, albeit not imbued with huge longevity.

Buy second hand, listen, enjoy, keep or sell on. I'm keeping mine.
