Most of Hexstatic’s releases up until now have been CD/DVD combinations aimed at highlighting their pioneering work in the audio/visual realm. Their last outing, Master View, included 3D ‘anaglyph’ versions of their music videos and even came with 3D glasses, but though their AV work is the duo’s bread and butter, they’re also decidedly dapper DJs--a fact heavily underlined by their Solid Steel: Listen & Learn album a couple of years ago.
Pick ‘N’ Mix continues where that album left off, focusing purely on the duo’s musical side with no visual ‘distractions’. As with their Solid Steel set, they blend a coolly eclectic mix of hip hop, rock, reggae and dance in a surprisingly accessible way. Tunes are chosen not for their underground ‘crate-diggin’’ credentials but for their capacity to get floors moving, and what really sets the set apart is the casual yet effective way these wildly varied records are strung together. Encompassing everything from Grandmaster & Melle Mel’s "White Lines" to The Kinks’ "You Really Got Me Going" and Dillinja’s "Cocaine (Running Around My Brain)", this is Hexstatic at their musical best. --Paul Sullivan
