Format: DVD
I recently saw The Hoax, and one of Howard Hughes's ideas (or at least, Clifford Irving's) was to create a crisis for a man, then save him for it, and in so doing, make yourself indispensable. Such is the game-plan of the editor of The Rag, who is faced with losing editorial control (and also his job) as the Chairman decides on a new pro-Monarchy policy, being led by his wife, the current Deputy Editor. This film follows the Fleet Street power struggle, the revelations about the characters and their ultimate consequences.

I agree with other reviewers that the acting is fine, and the script is sharp and economic, although not particularly witty and not played for laughs like The Thick of It, for example. The descriptions on the front of the box: "The Office on Crack", "Brutally Funny" and "An Outstanding Cast in a Classic British Comedy" are completely misplaced--did these reviewers actually watch the film? It's not a comedy.

The camerawork is relentlessly violent with numerous gratuitous black-and-white cutaways and everything hand held. It was so over-the-top, I did have to zone out near the start and treat it like a radio play. The DP should be ashamed of himself. I think the film was trying unsuccessfully to copy the look and feel of The Thick of It. There were also a few Koyaanisqatsi-style inserts, the pace of which was much more pleasing.

I stuck with it in spite of its unpleasant look, and I found it ultimately to be a worthwhile story. The film shows something of the working of the media. If you can stick with it, you may well get something out of it.

I could have mounted a camera to the undercarage of my car and produced better camera work than is presented in this movie. I am happy that this "crack Addict style" filming fad didn't survive, for very long. The movie is completely unwatchable. And that is sad because there was an opportunity to produce a great comic satire, that could have been exciting.

I think I would be angry had I paid more than 80P for this piteous movie.

Great cast but...like most of the other reviewers I felt the film was totally unwatchable due to the editing and zooming all over of the place of the shots. I stuck it for fifteen minutes but then turned the dvd off in utter frustration! Did anyone connected to the film actually watch it before it was released?

When the opening credits started, I thought I hope this annoying style of filming stops in a moment. Unfortunately, as the story line began it carried it on, making the film unwatchable, which was a real dissapointment as it looked like it could have been an enjoyable film.

While I'd agree that in most cases when you're faced with a film that tries to do something different it is respectful to try to understand what the creative forces behind it were trying to achieve. Rag Tale bypasses this in its pure contempt for the viewer and deserves no such effort. What is most profoundly disturbing about this film is that it appears a lot of brainstorming about camera angles and dynamic cinematography took place at some stage, they shot the film and then forgot to review the footage. The execution of this film is poor, the subject matter hardly worthy of praise nor at all a surprise to any aware of the machinations of a redtop tabloid. This film is attention seeking and ultimately fails to deliver a viewable performance.

Just what was the director on when he created this movie? A great cast, but a completely unwatchable film. The constant zooming and panning makes you feel sick, and it is almost impossible to focus on a specific scene. 5 minutes of trying to follow the camera work and I had to give up and take 2 ibuprofen.

This film is without doubt a disaster.
