5.0 out of 5 stars A Lost Little Gem, 29 Aug 2006
By pjr (London, England) - See all my reviews
Immortalised as one of the bands on the C86 compilation The Servants really were one for whom things never really got going, despite the fact they had a considerable ammount going for them. Chief amoungst these was David Westlake who, to all intents and purposes, was the driving force behind this band.

Westlake is one of a legion of songwriters who promised much but didn't really have the luck at finding the big time. This compilation covers a fragmented period (1986-89) when Westlake worked under the guise of The Servants producing some gentle understated pop music with echoes of the Velvets circa their third album with a dash of 80's jangle thrown in for good measure. The songs range from uplifting to whistful, almost melancholic.

Included here are all the singles, and the session recorded for John Peel which includes a couple of songs Westlake later recorded for Creation, under the Westlake moniker, when things looked quite promising for him. Also included are some demo material which proves what more there could have been.

Cherry Red have even convinced Luke Haines - who played with the band in the later incarnation of the band with then ex-Housemartin Hugh Whittaker - to write the sleevenotes which betray his own puzzlement that David Westlake didn't make more of a career for himself. However gems such as Rings On Her Fingers, The Sun A Small Star, and the sublime She's Always Hiding are now finally avaialble to enjoy again and for that we should be thankful.

4.0 out of 5 stars How were this band missed?, 9 May 2009
By R. Cowlin (London, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I came across The Servants after discovering that one of their members lectures at my University.

I am a right sucker for obscure 80s rock of all kinds so I duly surfed the web for anything I could find, and surprisingly I found a fair amount: a few videos, some blog reviews, David Westlake's solo album, and then this, "Reserved", another Cherry Red compilation; and a very good one at that.

Cherry Red have a bit of a knack for releasing forgotten little bands and they have done quite a decent job with The Servants.

The packaging is very good and extremely informative. We get a good few pages of the history of the band and lots of information regarding the recording locations of the songs and which ones are demos, singles, etc.
The disc is packed with all the tracks from the "golden years" of The Servants. It includes all their good singles, a wonderful Peel session and some demos for what could have become a great début.

The song selection is good but could have been even better if they had included a few tracks from the Westlake album and perhaps one or two from Disinterest just for the sake of completion.

Unfortunately not all the tracks are the best sound quality and it is quite obvious at times (as with many of Cherry Red's compilations) that a lot of the tracks are sourced from vinyl that is not always in the best condition. It would have been better if they had been able to use the master tapes, or even clean up the tracks. This, however, is just be being nit-picky.

Overall this is a very good compilation of a very good band that seem to have been forgotten by just about everyone. You can tell they were inspired by The Smiths but this does not take away from some very intelligent song writing and heart-felt lyrics.
