Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Formed in 2002 by Ian Williams (Don Caballero), John Stanier (Helmet, Tomahawk), Dave Konopka (Lynx) and Tyondai Braxton, Battles have garnered much critical acclaim--not to mention a devoted fan-base--with a series of seminal EPs released on various labels, that exposed their strange but compelling amalgam of rockist bombast and precision-made electro-rhythms. Now signed to indie giants Warp, the band release not their much-anticipated full-length but a combination of two older EPs, C and B. It’s a smart move, guaranteeing their odd, interplanetary sound is exposed to a wider audience before they forge ahead with any new material. Within the twelve songs featured here, the band move from electronic drone-pieces to unwieldy three-guitar rock thrash-outs and just about every other combination in between. Fearlessly experimental and impressively muscular, Battles won’t be for everyone, but for those who love the hypnotic voodoo and hypnotic rhetoric of bands like Can, they will be welcomed with open arms.--Paul Sullivan

4.0 out of 5 stars a good deal, 7 Feb 2008
I dont really agree with the guys that gave this one star, nor the one who gave it 5. The truth is that yes, there are tracks that people would label filler on these two cds, but its easily worth it for the proper tunes availible on it, especially the first and last tracks on ep b, which stand up to the best songs that battles have written. even the "filler" tracks are good to listen to if youre not expecting some three minute pop song (or even a more traditional battles sound). All in all this double pack is well worth the money (especially if you get it new and used) Go for it!

4.0 out of 5 stars The "Mirrored" Prototype, 6 Oct 2008
By Mr. Joel C. A. Cooney "Joel_C" (Glasgow, Scotland, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I picked up this EP compilation after having listened to (and adored) their debut Long Player "Mirrored", thusly there is an element of anti-climax about it. Put simply, Battles had already moved way past the EPs by the time the album arrived, thus when you listen to this collection, its hard not to view these pieces as "works in progress". It does miss Tyondai Braxtons' signature effected vocals. In some senses, Ian Williams' guitar work on this collection is the missing link between "Mirrored" and Don Caballero's "American Don". There are some superb essential tracks on here ("B+T" and "Traz" for example); whilst a handful of them are clearly little more than audio experiments (both versions of "IPT 2"). All that said, in the age of the iPod and user-defined playlists, containing a bit of filler isn't as big a problem as it used to be - you can just pick and choose the best tracks. Recommended for fans.

1.0 out of 5 stars Very Disappointing
Having heard the excellent 'Atlas' single, I had to hear more of Battles. While awaiting their album 'Mirrored', I thought I'd try this. Big mistake. Read more
